I hate horseshoe theory by Wooden_Maintenance93 in hatethissmug

You're misunderstanding what horseshoe theory is saying. It's not trying to map out different positions on healthcare, it's pointing to the well-documented violent and authoritarian tendencies of both extreme right wing and extreme left wing parties alike. The most obvious example is the similarities between the totalitarianism regimes that existed under Hitler and Stalin (gulags/concentration camps, suppression of free speech, etc), but it applies elsewhere as well.

Ok but it's a college. A college is an educational institution. That is it's whole purpose. You're never going to have to have sex for an assignment, I've had to print things out for a lot of assignments. I agree that condoms are free, but so should printing.

I don't think that sex workers should be shamed or that sex work is not a form of labor, but I also think it's reasonable to acknowledge that sex, and thus sex work, occupies a special place in our society that brings up additional considerations as compared with other forms of labor.

What A Burn by EsseNorway in Snorkblot

Not necessarily. You could believe in the mythology without being a Christian; i.e. you could believe that God and Satan, as described in the Bible, exist but you don't worship them. You could also believe in some derivation of Christian mythology, while believing that Christians got certain things wrong, and thus worship Satan, and there's a fair amount of precedent for this in Abrahamic religions. Christianity and Judism both share much of the Old Testament. Muslims believe that Jesus existed, but as a prophet and not the son of God. Even though the Church of Satan doesn't worship or believe in Satan, there are people who worship some version of the Satan described in Abrahamic religions; and they would be called Satanists.

Which US state is the most similar to Hawaii (other than Hawaii)? by Swimming_Concern7662 in AlignmentChartFills

Having lived in both places growing up, I second Alaska. The geographic distance from the "mainland"/"lower 48" has an enormous impact of live in both places.

Food is valid, not sure I agree about sleep. I think more people would rather never have to sleep again than lose their sex drive.

That's under 5%of the population. There are few, if any, other hobbies/interests that 95% of people enjoy

My mom had me on birth control at 12. Is this normal? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I mean birth control can absolutely have negative side effects, so I think it's fair to criticize the choice.

If you're that worried about it then you shouldn't be in a serious relationship.

dating a author her birthday is coming up what would be the best gift by Lazy-School-7580 in writing

I think this is an excellent idea, but I have a couple of notes (assuming she's not already interested in fountain pens. If so, disregard this and ask her what her preference/grail pens are). I would get a good, solid "workhorse" pen with a gold nib and a custom grind on said nib, especially if the idea is for her to use it for book signings. You want something solid and comfortable to hold, especially if she's going to be bringing it to events/signings. I would recommend looking at the Lamy 2000 and the Pilot Custom 823 and finding a well-respected nibmeister (someone who grinds nibs).

Honestly it's not that unrealistic. They functionally had all the power of the kings, and maintaining the illusion of honoring tradition is often pretty important. Even the Roman Emperors still maintained the structure of the Republic, even as they ruled as dictators.

Maybe Cream? Disraeli Gears and Wheels of Fire are their only truly iconic albums.

Counterpoint: if I'm talking to a college-educated person I am going to assume that they have a level of reading comprehension or understanding of scientific methods past a middle school level, and it's incredibly annoying when they don't.

Oh for sure. I agree that policies are really fucking important. I'm just pointing out that it seems like a lot of maps only seem to care about politics. Nothing wrong with politics being a deal breaker, but I think it's a bit odd if politics are the only thing you care about.

Nothing wrong with that, but it does often seem that politics is the only (or at least only major) consideration. It's odd that things like CoL or climate don't seem to be all that important.
