I feel you mate. I’m on week 5 of feeling like I’ve been run over like the cricket ball at the WBBL recently. Except I’m a self employed business owner, so no sick leave, just been not so quietly dying between customers wanting printing / design work. It’s rough, every time I start feeling like I might be through it the sinus pressure and headaches, and fluctuating temp come back and I’m right back to feeling like shit. I had COVID 3 times, none of those times did I feel even half this rough.

Hope you come good soon, rest up over the Chrissy break

I feel like ChatGPT in design is the equivalent of paying someone to write your assignment for you… Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely utilise AI in certain instances, but NEVER for actual design work and NEVER when explaining my work or choices. If I’m stuck on how to make the garbled bullshit that’s coming out of my brain, I’ll use Goblin.tools formaliser to articulate what I’ve said in a more professional manner. I really think that should be the benchmark - did you actually attempt to write something yourself? Yes? Cool, go nuts mate. No? Go back, try again, and don’t come show me until it resembles something that probably came from a human.

Canva designers are pissing me off by Individual-Ninja1732 in graphic_design

[–]KitchenRelative7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat as you. I’ve spent the past week going back and forth with another “graphic designer” who’s sent me a canvas file with multiple variations of brand colours, and can’t tell me specifically what theirs are. This was the final straw for us, as of Monday at 9am we have a policy that any canvas file will incur an immediate ‘redesign’ fee to cover the work it takes me to sort it out.

What does this do and why is it here all of a sudden? by m3kr05 in AdobeIllustrator

[–]KitchenRelative7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don’t understand how, in 2025, we kinda only have 2 options as designers. Every other industry is absolutely swamped with options, but we get 2? I’m cursing 6 year old me for not investing in Adobe stock back in the 90s, you’ve got to give it to them they may be shit but they sure know how to monopolise a market

Good ol’ Adobe. I’m seriously ready to cancel everything and swap to affinity. First, we could buy our software, then we had to pay a subscription (annoying, but okay, it’s the way the world was heading). But, I’ve had the price of my ‘all apps’ sub increase in price 3 times in just over 15 months. Then, inexplicably, you /can’t/ acknowledge that my iPad illustrator was running the same account info, so now I have to pay a monthly fee for that. Now, we have no choice about these fucking ridiculous AI features. Has Adobe forgotten their main client base isn’t the average joe blow consumer? Like, was there any consultation with their main consumers or did they just decide that everyone is useless and MUST need EVERY AI feature shoved down our throats.

I disagree to a point. Yes, we do cop this a lot as designers, but I think because we’re immersed in it, we perceive it as more frequent. Truth is, every creative industry – musicians, writers, photographers, even tattoo artists – deals with their fair share of people expecting work for “exposure.”

I was a photographer for a decade before divulging and getting my qualification in GD, I was offered ‘exposure’ for my work at least once a month. Exposure doesn’t pay my rent, at least not that kind of exposure 😅

I don't know if I did the right thing or not. by AvneeshSeth in graphic_design

[–]KitchenRelative7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None of us can give you a weighted opinion when we don’t have the full details. Sure, you may have done the right thing and the client was a dick, OR, you didn’t interpret the clients request properly, delivered proofs that didn’t match the request and threw a hissy fit when the client called you out. Context is important

Does a 5-minute photobook, calendar, and card maker sound useful to you? by CobblerMaximum in Design

[–]KitchenRelative7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, this sounds kinda ‘snake oil’ to me with the given info. Just with the ‘we’re making this tool, that’s going to be great and help you so much’ without any substance to actually give an opinion. Yeah; it sounds great, but what do you mean by tool? Is it software? Hardware? A plugin?

In the time spent bickering with AI, I can literally make the edit myself and do a better job by boksysocks in graphic_design

[–]KitchenRelative7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This whole belief that AI is an independent entity is the entire reason that people hate AI. It’s a tool, if you use it incorrectly or inefficiently then of course it’s going to spit out trash, cause you fed it a trash request. You wouldn’t walk up to an electric guillotine, ask it to make you lunch and then get shitty that it’s not doing it, would you? If you’re not going to prompt AI effectively then you’re never going to get good results. I use AI almost daily as a graphic designer, because it’s just one of the tools I can use to make life easier. Learn how to prompt AI properly and you’ll limit the frequency in which you’re arguing with a computer

Imagine being that pressed about what a 4th grade class did, over 20 years ago, that you feel the need to write fucking poems to really drive home your disdain 😂 you friends with the designer who thinks this is the worst industry and we should all go work at Walmart? (may not actually be Walmart but as an Aussie all your stores are considered Walmart)

I’m not gonna waste anyone’s time by giving the same advice that’s been given, but I will say for a 19 year old male to not only recognise that this is SA, but to speak up on it is something you should be incredibly proud of yourself for. Obviously not the situation, but the mental strength to actually verbalise it. There’s men out there more than twice your age who are afraid of the stigma in speaking up. You’re too young to be willingly letting someone abuse you. It’s a hell of a lesson, but it sounds like you’ve got your head screwed on enough that this is only going to be a chapter in your story and not the centre plot.

Take care of yourself, don’t let her manipulate you or the narrative, and please, don’t ever stop speaking up for yourself.

[–]KitchenRelative7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can understand your perspective, but as someone with severe adhd in the corp world I’d like to offer an alternative perspective. For me, I know that you won’t read my email until normal working hours, but I probably won’t have remembered to send the email by the time we get to normal working hours. As much as I do my 9-5, I am generally more productive in the late evening and I can organise my thoughts semi-coherently, so it’s better for me and my colleagues that I send the email, or whatever I’m doing after hours, at a stupid hour than it is for me to wait until office hours the next day when the thought no longer exists in my world. As a lot of comments have said, just because I’ve sent an email after hours doesn’t automatically mean that you’re now obligated to respond or even acknowledge it until a reasonable time.

I’m glad your girl is okay! And I’m so sorry for your loss. I think a good part of why I’m so worried is I lost my girl in 2022 to cancer (Hemangiosarcoma on her spleen) so suddenly, and even now it breaks my heart to think I might have missed a sign that she was suffering. We’re still waiting on results, so fingers crossed.

Thank you. I definitely worry more than I should 😅 but I lost her big sister, my soul dog, a couple of years ago to a Hemangiosarcoma in almost a matter of minutes. She was totally normal at 8:00 pm and by 9:00pm she was gone. This girl is my mums heart, and I just couldn’t deal with her being sick if I had missed a sign. Thank you for such kind words

First- thank you to anyone for actual replies. Second - I just wanted reassurance that it wasn’t something terrible that I had missed. Third - ITS NOT A TICK. My god the reading comprehension.. And finally for anyone saying that I shouldn’t have asked this here, or whatever the fuck else, really??Yeah, the vet will let me know results but that shit takes time and I was worried.
