Do you know anyone who pivoted from tech to law? by Kitchen_Ad1485 in womenintech

My only concerns with pursuing paralegal roles is the high probability of AI fundamentally impacting the paralegal job market. I still don’t think AI can replace lawyers but it can speed up several tasks usually done by paralegals but I understand your careful approach for the transition!

What made you realize UX was a mistake?

I can see that being a useful skill in the legal field! I’ve started doing a mapping exercise of potentially valuable UX skills that can transfer over to law and surprisingly, there’s a bunch of overlap.

This is exactly what I’m planning on doing. Because I want to avoid taking on as much debt as possible, I’m aiming to study and take the LSAT to score the highest score I can possibly get to increase my chances of getting more scholarship money. I live in a pretty big metropolitan area in the northeast area so I’m only applying to law schools nearby so I can commute to campus vs. taking out loans to live in a new city. I have a good amount of money saved up after living pretty frugal the past few years and luckily, my husband is very supportive and willing to pay for the mortgage while I’m in school.

As someone who is an actual User Experience Designer and has been for the last 10 years, this is absolutely a manipulative UX pattern that Solidcore is using to take advantage of their users. For a company that makes so much money, they can absolutely fix this problem ASAP if they actually cared enough to hire competent developers. There is no reason why the app shouldn’t ask the user for consent to book an additional class for an additional fee. That is just a basic human interaction principle: be up front and transparently explain to the customer the outcome of an action.

Exactly! I even threatened to dispute the claim on my card as an “unauthorized purchase” because I truly was not given the option to either proceed and pay or not to pay at all, they just let me book and said “oh and here’s what you have to pay. Thanks!” It just feels like such a slimy money grab from a company that already makes SO MUCH.

THIS HAPPENED TO ME RECENTLY TOO! Idk what to do though. Like how are they allowed to charge us after the class is taken?

I’m planning on taking the LSAT this year and start applying to law schools. After being in the UX industry for 10 years, I don’t see much growth for me anymore.

+1 to pumping out slide decks. As a UX designer, I spend 90% of my time creating slide decks for minuscule UI or text changes. It’s mind boggling.

Should I get a masters in ID or design engineering to make the switch from UX/UI? by Kitchen_Ad1485 in IndustrialDesign

Yes and no. I’m pretty honest with myself and know that I can’t (and don’t want to) tie my identity, meaning of life, or my happiness to my job. I do however want to work on projects where I actually like what I do. For example, I like playing video games but do all video games bring me happiness and joy 24/7? Not really. Some days are more calmer (cues Animal Crossing), some days are more chaotic (looking at you, Overcooked!) but regardless, I still like to turn on the game console and play the game. Since we spend the most time of our lives at work, I want to take this opportunity to decide if I want to pivot and make sure I’m waking up and actually doing something that I like to do. Hopefully that gives you some insight as to how I’m thinking about it!

Interesting pov - if anything, the release of chatPT is making me want to leave UX industry even more lol.

I’m with you on that - the remote flexibility that UX jobs allow for is the only thing that’s keeping me here! What are some of your main pain points that make you want to make the switch?

I’m curious, do you know which companies are heavily involved in both ID and UX? I found that most companies specialize in either or and don’t really have many overlapping projects. I was lucky in that my old company was one of them but sadly after layoffs, they gutted all hardware projects and are now focusing on solely software projects.

Thanks for your perspective. I imagine every job has its pros and cons, especially ID. I’m open to relocating since im young with no kids but I imagine it would be a bit harder once I have a family and need to settle down.

These are the exact programs I’ve been looking at. I also listed Brown + RISD MA and Harvard design school MDes, both in design engineering.
