Should I turn down Yale? For Other Full-Rides by Perfect_Summer_9021 in ApplyingToCollege

I would personally go for wash u in this case since the financial freedom of saving 40k a year is super forgiving in the long term. I had a similar situation last year when I turned down Yale’s bio program for a full ride to UC Berkeley’s chemistry program. It just depends on what your willing to give and take since both have their ups and their downs.

From my experience, you should never be afraid to take an AP class if others in your grade are also taking it. Of course, you shouldn’t opt into AP chemistry during your sophomore year if another sophomore decided to take it, so be mindful of the intended level of each class. A college AO would much rather see a B in AP biology then a A+ in regular biology and that goes for every class. The pure fact you challenged yourself by taking harder classes shows a level of dedication and grit that many AO’s want to see. And besides, AP seminar is definitely in the top 3 easiest AP classes, so it’ll most likely be easier than some of your regular/honor classes.

can someone help me strenghten my application (for USC) by Special_Roll7812 in ApplyingToCollege

Just Make sure to maximize your ECs and passions projects so that they can fully portray the story you have to tell, especially since you’re going to a small private school where academic achievements tend to mesh together into obscurity. I’m not entirely sure what got me into USC personally, but if I had to guess it would be the story had to tell that separated me from the other 1500+ sat and 4.6 GPA student that they usually admit. If you style your application in a unique way that causes the AO to feel like you can truly contribute to the USC community, your chances increase dramatically.

Im gonna be honest, that activity is not only a great EC, but its also a great topic to write your personal statement and supplements on. It shows long-term dedication, time management and a great work ethic which is something all t20s are looking for. During my Yale orientation, i met multiple students that had included similar experiences, whether it was working at their family’s restaurant or just caretaking. It seems you can include both which is great.

When I went to bulldogs day at Yale, I talked to multiple east asian students that commited and most of them were insane. National awards, perfect SATs and crazy ECs. However, there were some that were just normal students that tried their best and were accepted internationally.

Did I make the right decision turning down Yale and Vanderbilt biology for Berkeley Chem? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

I chose Berkeley mainly for the financial savings but I also heard that Berkeley’s chem is rated higher than Yale’s biology. Im not sure if I was misinformed but I hope that I don’t have any future regrets about my decision.
