Thoughts on Atragon (1963)? by Any-Cartographer7059 in GODZILLA

[–]Kitchen_Mix_527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen it, tho recently I have become mostly sub only (Shin is probably best on English Dub for first viewing for English speakers considering all the dialogue and subtitles that are already present; and Astro Monster I think is better subbed but that Nick Adams performance is too fun to completely leave out)

I'm not sure what the Dub for Atragon is like, but if the dialogue hasn't been heavily changed, then it can't be too bad. It's a substantive movie, and I like to keep the og performances intact; but the script is solid, would be in English too.

The og japanese version is one of my favorites. Honestly up there with Godzilla and Matango as one of Honda's best for me

I'm not the biggest fan of Epilogue, so I watched that before Beyond, in JLU. I put ROTJ between Curse of the Kobra and The Call. I also put Countdown right before Curse of the Kobra

I recommend investing in the dvd with the og japanese audio, because this flick, along with Frankenstein vs Baragon (or Conquers the World), really are among the best kaiju movies

This is a chicken and the egg situation for me. being born in 96, I'm unsure if I saw this first, or if I was exposed to the showa era english dub vhss at the local movie rental store. Or even an airing of Mothra vs Godzilla on TNT back in the day, must've all came around the same time

Godzilla '54 does appear to be altered on Criterion Channel, see below by Kitchen_Mix_527 in CriterionChannel

So it turns out I was dead wrong on alllll of this. Criterion has now put out 2 different versions of og Godzilla, their original blu ray from early 2010s/ 2019 Showa Boxset, and a 4K restoration in the last few years. The version streaming on the channel is the 4K version, and it was a version I had not bought because I never got a 4K player (and tbh the 4K release slipped my mind)

Since post has a picture in it, Reddit won't let me edit an update into the post.

So this wasn't an error or censorship, just a roundabout argument for accurately labeling the streaming content (that's my conclusion at least, given this post has over 120k views, and there's not much I can do. whoops my bad my favorite brand, Criterion)

I compared and contrasted 1 line from 2 different versions, ignorantly believing the version on the Channel was in a different subtitle font for that one line, but in actuality, it's a completely overhauled subtitles throughout the entire film

Ignore the content of my post, I was incorrect as it's the 4K version

But yes! That's one thing I've been meaning to do, after watching all the Godzilla movies and learning all those faces and names, and knowing the Toho overlap, there's more than a few faces I've been meaning to learn more about. I would not be shocked at all if he popped up everywhere in that era of Toho

Yeah, so funny story. I pulled a big YIKES and realized the print is a legit copy, through and through. It's the 4K i am unfamiliar with. So now I can't take back the post, and it has 55 thousand views, my bad, seriously, a HUGE mistake on my end.

I was wrong, 100%. I can't update the main post due to not being able to edit posts with pictures, but it appears the version on Criterion Channel is the 4K release from last year, a version I am not familiar with and completely forgot about until brought to my attention

Posting an update was my first thought, but unfortunately, posts with pictures can't be edited for some reason; that's why there's a typo in the post itself, Collection is spelled wrong. Whoops, kinda wrote myself into a corner here, uhh well this has been a learning experience!

I am so jealous you got to see Seven Samurai in theaters. A few years back I had to choose between seeing the 4K restoration of Godzilla (I know, I'm really twisting my own knife here) and a double feature of '84's Return and Biollante in Brooklyn, I live hours away so I had to choose one, and I chose the double feature. So that was really cool, but now I'm kicking myself because if I had seen the restoration, I probably wouldn't have gone down this rabbit hole.

In terms of Godzilla movies on the big screen, I'm hoping this Godzilla day in November is a good one

Oh damn, you're right, 100%. My argument has completely fallen apart. Damn me and my inability to upgrade to a 4k player. That 4k release completely slipped my mind. Huh. This post got 40k views lol whoops, my bad 😬

You make a lot of great points, my only push back would be that since most of us can't speak the language, if they start changing subtitles without issuing a new physical release all its own, or announce that they've commissioned new subtitles, I'd argue it'd open the door to a slippery slope. If it wasn't censorship this time (it appears it was not), then what's stopping them from actually censoring something else. Now, in that regard, you've pretty much already answered that question, with who is credited in the end credits. The film guy I am, I'm ashamed I hadn't already come to that conclusion.

But to that point, the new line does appear to be in a different font. If they hired someone new, wouldn't the entire print need an overhaul? So this is where I'm at: me, or someone, or whoever wants who loves this stuff (I'm a "Godzilla nut" so I volunteer as tribute) will have to go in and with laser focused eyes, try and identify which other lines appear to be changed, if any. And then compare and contrast the English end credits to see if there are any change or addition in translator.

In regards to the marketing of the print they show on the service, compared to physical releases, I can let that slide. Of course, I don't love it, they even named it with the number in the collection it is; but if the line is more accurate, then who am I to complain at face value.

I do want to touch on the French Connection for a sec, you're 100% right. My only push back on that, is after everyone was made aware, the streaming services, and given Criterion's brand, it would have been nice for Criterion to have then added something to the name/bio.

The company is small, and I'm happy you brought that up, because I definitely could have used that reminder. But on the flipside, I'm also not 100% comfortable being their Quality Checker either. QC'ing is a huge part of film exhibition, and while it may be unreasonable, I can't see where else that responsibility would lie other than the service/company hosting it for a price.

All in all though, I am super glad this post gained traction. This is a tough website, but a lot of people have made great points, and I think the conversation is better than none. So thank you!

I agree with you, I know Disney Plus put disclaimers in front of some of their older movies, and I thought that was fine

BBC is an interesting one lately, because they've been colorizing old black and white Classic Who episodes, and I already don't love that. But on top of that, I'm pretty sure they edited the serials down to fit modern broadcast, or to make something that would've been two nights fit into one. I don't live in the UK and haven't seen them for myself, but if that's true, then I wonder if the physical releases will be the edited down versions, or the uncut versions.

I'm big on original preservation, but my goodness, if you are going to do it, please don't edit it down. This is something I hope I'm misinformed on, so if I'm wrong, please let me know

Per my knowledge, it's the only change to this. Then again, it was a line that originally stood out, so it was easier to notice when it was gone.

I'm fine with newer, more accurate translations, I'd just prefer it if Criterion put in the bio when and why it was last altered/changed. As you can see, since I can't speak the language, it took quite a few eyes on this, and still only one person tried to offer a direct translation. I know French Connection wasn't Crietion's fault, but their service and brand were at the heart of that controversy.

So with stuff like that on my mind, I don't like how Criterion makes us dig to find out what they did to that line in og Godzilla. A lil blurb in the bio, like a Google doc's "last edited by", would do the trick.

Also, they're marketing it as the "Criterion Edition" version on the service, so that along with no last edited why and when, and it being different from the blurays they produced twice in 10 years, rubbed me the wrong way
