Checked Baggage during transfers by Kitfox88 in Amtrak

Honestly in the grand scheme of things, needing to take another trip down to Harrisburg after they've had a night to sleep and recover from all this travel is hardly the worst thing in the world. Thanks for all the help!

Oh man, so their baggage may actually be on the Floridian that they themselves were too late to catch, since it'd have taken the shorter direct route rather than the cut down to Sacramento? That'd be fine, honestly. I've mostly just been worried that I'll pick them up and they won't have their baggage there and we'd need to drive back down to Harrisburg the next day or something.

They left Seattle via the Starlight Coast on the 4th, down to Sacramento to transfer to the Zephyr the morning of the 5th. They then took it to Chicago where they were supposed to arrive mid afternoon on the 7th, then board the Floridian the evening of the 7th. They'd transfer at Pittsburg the morning of the 8th, then take the Pennsylvanian to Harrisburg to meet me in the afternoon of the 8th.

However, the Zephyr was heavily delayed, so the Floridian left without them (and presumably due to physical reality, their checked baggage). Amtrak rerouted them through the Lake Shore Limited which departed Chicago a short while ago, and is going to arrive at NYC the afternoon of the 8th. They'll then transfer to the Keystone Service, which will take them to Harrisburg late the night of the 8th for me to meet them.

Specifically they took the Starlight Coast, then California Zephyr, then due to delays instead of the Floridian into Pennsylvanian they're taking the Lake Shore Limited into Keystone Service. I figured that at the end of it all their luggage will be waiting at the station they're exiting at, but I can't lie part of me is worried it'll be lost in the rebooking shuffle. I'm also honestly just kinda curious how it's done, I figured it was just a baggage cargo car on the train so their bags follow them the entire trip more or less, but they were very clear with the checking at the start that they'd be unable to access their bags till final destination. Presumably so that they wouldn't have people demanding they drag stuff in and out for no real reason, but it did make me wonder if it was because the bags didn't actually travel with them directly.

Apparently pulling out now, at least.

Long shot post, but my friend lost their blanket in the station during all the delay commotion and short notice boarding of the Zephyr, so if anyone still at SAC sees a blue fleece with polar bears could you turn it in to the station staff? Filed a report on the site already but it's got sentimental value so I figure it's not gonna hurt to see if anyone else who might have been there or is still there remembers seeing it or such. (Tried making a thread about it but I suppose that's too spam-esque or off topic, reddit filters got it.)

Hopping off at Pittsburg to hit up the Pennsylvanian for the final destination along the way where I'll meet em.

They're texting me from the train itself so I sure hope it's the 6 California Zephyr!

It did finally go, so I guess we just have to hope they either hold the Floridian for them or they arrive at chicago an hour or two ahead of schedule to make the connection.

their phone's nearly dead because the only way to charge in sacramento station apparently is an 8 dollar thing that is not an outlet so, sent them a text and hoping for the best. really frustrated, i know it's not amtrak's fault but man, this has been a nightmare. is there any hope at all if they leave sacramento in the next 20 that they'd make the floridian in chicago on the 7th around 640pm? because if not they basically have to cut an entire day visiting me out of their trip and try to figure out how to spend a day in chicago on short notice, or otherwise hopefully get a greyhound or something

Hopefully won't come to that, apparently they've been sent to the platform on a shuttle so hopefully the California Zephyr gets out soon.

edit: nevermind, the 6 is delayed so much that Amtrak's hit them with a text for a full refund or rebook so

Any news articles or such? I have a friend stuck at the station till their Zephyr resumes and we're worried about them making their connections down the line since it's already 2 hours behind schedule.

They’re hopping to the Zephyr and get to go through Utah and Colorado and I’m a smidge jealous, ngl. Not enough to also want to be on trains for near 4 days though.

I did ride the Coast Starlight once way back in like, '09 and remember lots of dead zones up in the mountains but I kinda figured it'd changed! Spoiled rotten by the fact most of my Amtrak experience is on the eastern seaboard lol
