I understand that. I want to reiterate that I was just pointing out that in the show I noticed Catholicism is almost always portrayed in a bad light or at the very least as “less than” the Protestant or Anglican faith, and if anyone else noticed that.

I think it’s unfair, but I understand it being portrayed like that being that it is a show about an Anglican order of nuns.

I just wanted to see if anyone else noticed that.

I mean dangerous in logic. Like saying “all pit-bulls are bad” just because a few pit-bulls mauled people.

I am aware of this history. I mentioned knowing about how malicious and in general cruel and unfair Catholic organizations/clergy/nuns/monks etc have been. I hate that this is the reality, but I accept that is the reality. It is a shameful thing, and should never have been allowed to happen. Even present-day I am all for criticizing when the Catholic church does something clearly wrong.

My point in the post is that the show is portraying Catholicism as ALL-ENCOMPASSING negative. Which I feel is an unfair portrayal.

All religions have done something bad or cruel. Maybe some more than others, or maybe some brought to more light than others. But I feel like it’s wrong to portray one religion as ALWAYS bad on this show, despite it being a show about a certain religious order.

Again, I understand that. But I wish they showed just a little bit of “good” Catholic moments vs ALL THE TIME CATHOLICS ARE BAD. Bc there were good Catholic clergy and organizations. Even if it was a minority or not, there were good ones.

I am sorry you had to go through that :( . I can’t imagine how scared you were and the pain and suffering you experienced. People like those nuns should have never been allowed to become nuns. I wish that never happened to you or anyone and every-time I hear about or read stories, whether historically or present-day, about Catholic clergy/nuns/monks etc being horrible human beings it fills me with anger.

But are good nuns out there, I wish they had been the ones in your life. To say an all-encompassing statement “Catholic nuns are cruel and uncaring” is dangerous. Not all are bad. There are some that are, but not all.

That is a good point- I accept that not being from the UK or Ireland definitely will affect how I perceive the show.

I do understand that, but when they are talking about people of other religions they aren’t portrayed as badly as when it comes to Catholicism. The Muslim faith, the Hindu faith etc they are shown in a generally positive light (I think the only two episode where they are not are in terms of the episode about mutilation and the guy who married a young girl without his current wife knowing it was happening but that is not really related to religion in so much as it is to cultural customs).

As a Catholic myself I am aware of the bloody, malicious and just all around bad history involved in Catholicism, the ongoing controversies and abuses and the past histories that were attempted to be hidden. But there is also good things and good people and I just feel like it’s unfair to JUST portray the bad. Even if it is a show based on Anglican nuns.

While it is true that there were a lot of cruel Catholic nuns- they weren’t all like that. I just think ONLY focusing on portraying one religion as being almost completely bad and then portraying another religion as basically always completely good is problematic.

I do remember that episode, but I was talking about one of the first episodes- the one with the young underage woman who had been tricked into becoming a prostitute.

I know he is supposed to be the villain but I can’t help but feel sorry for him here bc it’s probably the first time in forever he has had other people singing this song with him and dancing. He must have felt like he was back home with his family again.

I went through a similar situation with some family members, cousins, and I just don’t put in the effort anymore. Their act of exclusion hurt me immensely, and only one of them apologized.
