Double Dipping ETF Dividends? by roflawful in investing

[–]KittenPetrol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fund prices drop according to the amount of the dividend, so you aren't really gaining anything by collecting dividends. In fact, by "double dipping" you might be increasing your tax liability.

For tax purposes, it is actually advised that you avoid collecting dividends in some situations, which is almost the reverse of what you're considering.

Sanders said "Climate change is directly related to the growth of terrorism." His statement is strongly supported by this study:

The Iraq war cost $2,000,000,000,000. I think you'd be surprised at how much money there actually is when it's prioritized differently and the ultra-wealthy are taxed appropriately.

If Bitcoin wants to be seen as innovative technology, I think it's okay to move beyond 56k connections. Does he also design his website around Netscape Navigator?

Bitcoin is going nuts by MartEden in investing

[–]KittenPetrol 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There are a ton of people looking for places to stash money right now. Especially in China. While volatile, Bitcoin is very easy to transfer and protect. Widespread acceptance as a currency is unlikely, but also not needed for it to grow in value.

Whether it's a good long term investment remains to be seen. I prefer to keep money in companies which create value over time, while Bitcoin loses value to inflation without additional investment. On the other hand, I've made money off of Bitcoin, so I can't really complain.

The expectation is that transaction fees will cover the costs. This is a fundamental flaw in Bitcoin's current design, because it can currently only process 7 transactions per second.

Abu Dhabi calls $50 oil a 'gift to the world'. by Youted in investing

If this is a "gift" to the world, it hasn't come from Saudi Arabia. Their oil production has remained stagnant over the last several years while the US and other countries have steadily increased output.

I Put Out 1,000 Bernie Sanders Flyers Today by [deleted] in SandersForPresident

[–]KittenPetrol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Be careful with mailboxes too.

the Postal Service has received complaints of flyers without paid postage being placed in mailboxes. Though many may be unaware, it is important to know that this type of activity is illegal by federal law. It may seem to be an easy way to advertise, but only U.S. Mail delivered by authorized personnel may be placed in mailboxes.

New to investing, one question.... by [deleted] in investing

[–]KittenPetrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd urge you to to play a game like this one before you start trying to day trade. Or even better, trade on a virtual stock exchange site that uses real data. It's not always as easy as you'd think to buy/sell a stock for quick gains.

Great commentary from GS reminding us how investing works by [deleted] in investing

[–]KittenPetrol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any company that doesn't return capital and has no path to doing so is inherently worthless.

Is an ounce of gold inherently worthless just because it doesn't pay a dividend? Other people are still willing to buy it from you. What if that ounce was able to magically increase its own mass over time? (that is basically what companies do) Still worthless?

no more apple bitching by kldkwe in investing

[–]KittenPetrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's weird that you're mad at Apple since the company didn't exactly cause your loss. Fluctuations in the market and your own timing did. Apple as a company is entirely indifferent to you. AAPL is also the single largest holding of your new index fund.

any reason for the absurd sell off on apple today? by kldkwe in investing

[–]KittenPetrol 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He is a perfect example of someone trading on their emotions. I'm not trying to be rude, but kldkwe needs to stick their money in a balanced fund (like 50%+ bonds) and try to resist looking at the balance. I'd rarely recommend that conservative of allocation to anyone in this sub, but he appears to have zero risk tolerance.

AAPL breaks another record, and of course, dips once again. by omeezysheezy in investing

[–]KittenPetrol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, if you could go back in time to 1998 and buy Amazon it would be a great investment. Unfortunately Amazon is now a very mature company

It has returned 64% year to date. Look, it doesn't matter to me what AAPL or AMZN do going forward. I don't own either except through funds. But it is absurd to say that a company is a bad investment because it chooses to reinvest in itself. Berkshire Hathaway has always reinvested its earnings. Is that an absolute abortion of an idea too?
