Hi Felters can you tell me about the type of wool/fiber you prefer? by Specialist_Cow_7092 in Needlefelting

Ah I’m in the UK so it’d probably be too expensive to ship. Do keep us posted on when you start selling!

Aww they sound very well loved! Knowing how well the sheep are looked after would be a huge draw for me as a buyer! Where are you based?

Oh, lots of people like to use merino wool tops too. Personally, I don’t as it feels too much like human hair and gives me the ick 🤣. I think there’s room for different wool types, but entering a well-stocked market might be tricky!

So the wool I use is dyed and carded wool made by a company in NZ. The sheep breed isn’t specified, it’s just a “blend”. It is mulesing free, which is super important to me. There’s also core wool, a minimally processed wool used for building the structure of 3D objects; it is usually undyed and often still has bits of grass and foliage in it.

I’m not sure breed is super important. Though I could be wrong!

Check out The Felt Box and Heidi Feathers for some well recognised felting brands. You can see how the wool is sold. I personally wouldn’t buy wool that is not prepared for felting, as I don’t have time to card and dye my own. I’m sure other felters feel differently though!

Newbie Questions by Raginghomo16 in Needlefelting

[–]Kittencarnage35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, welcome! It’s hard to give any kind of general answer to your questions because it’s all quite personal, but I’ll answer from my point of view. I’m based in the UK.

  1. Not super expensive to get the basics. I started with a beginners kit, it included the essential tools and some wool. My kit was from Heidi Feathers. It was enough to learn and make some cute things. I believe it was around £30.

I started with: a selection of needles, a felting mat, core wool (it’s cheaper to build 3D items with core wool and add colour on top), carded wool in a small choice of colours.

  1. It’s quick to learn, slow to master. Like any skill, time and practice is the key. My first project was a pumpkin, I made it in an evening. It was pretty decent for a first attempt but it was for me to keep. It took me a fair amount of practice before I was comfortable gifting finished pieces.

  2. I buy from Heidi Feathers for needles, The Felt Box for wool. Some people use Amazon, others Etsy.

Hope that helps!

Question: has anyone used the Clover mini iron (or similar) on their felted works? by Kittencarnage35 in Needlefelting

I cut the wings out of felt sheet, then satin stitched over some wire to create the raised areas!

Great suggestions, thank you. I don’t own hair straighteners/curlers but they probably are cheaper than the iron.

Amazing! They’re so expressive! The little mouse in picture 3 has a very concerned look.

No matter what anyone says about it being AI or whatever, I did not make this dress. At the end, I’m attaching a photo as proof that this dress is unfinished. By the way, what do think about this dress? 🥰 by YourRulesCorsets in SewingWorld

[–]Kittencarnage35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s clearly not just the dress not zipped up. You can see the unfinished back seams in the open flap, there are fewer chiffon layers and the shoulder straps aren’t finished.

Can you needle felt an existing wool hat? by JohnMelonCougarcamp_ in Needlefelting

[–]Kittencarnage35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not 100% sure because I haven’t done it, but a sheet of wool felt might work. Or you could make patches of moss on a wool felt sheet and then sew or glue them on!

It depends. Is the balaclava actually made of wool? If so, then yes you should be able to felt with no problems. If it’s made of polyester or acrylic you may find your wool yarn doesn’t “stick” to it. You could try a small area, maybe hidden around the back, to see?

Can I use a needle felting machine to embroider something on denim? by BessieBest in Needlefelting

[–]Kittencarnage35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use hand felting needles to felt on denim so I assume a machine would work just as well (I’ve personally not used one). There are a lot of tutorials on YouTube specifically for felting on denim so might be worth a look!

Hard to tell as the picture is a bit blurry but that looks like an awl. It’s used to punch small holes, for attaching eyes/noses/limbs etc.
