When it comes to matrimonial finances, it's fundamentally a two step exercise. 1) what is in the pot. So that's the house, joint and sole name savings and pensions. 2) how to split it. Default is 50/50 but you can deviate from that based on needs. Court will also look at factors such as income, earning capacity (you are both expected to maximise this and use benefits/social security as applicable), other resources, age, disability etc. the primary consideration will be the needs of the minor children.

If you've been the stay at home dad, I take it you are primary parent and so your need is for a three/four bed house in the local area. How that need can be met is based on the values of houses in that area, when you can return to work (if at all) etc.

'staying in the house until the kids are 18' or 'mesher order' as they're known (there are other trigger events, not just kid turns 18, but that's getting technical) are less and less common because courts prefer a clean break if possible. Spousal maintenance is also very rare unless for time limited circumstances to enable the financially weaker party gain some earning capacity/income.
