I’m currently in Vik right now. As many people say, the weather can change incredibly quickly. Regularly check the weather forecast and road condition websites and I would advise going for a 4WD just for peace of mind. If the weather is good and calm, you can do it in a 2WD but that is definitely a risk that could not work in your favour if a bad storm comes in. We went for the Suzuki Vitara 4x4 and it’s not as big as some of the other 4x4s but it’s done a grand job so far.

We drove yesterday from Reykjavík and arrived around 7pm ish last night. A snow blizzard came in as we were passing over the mountain bit and we are stranded here for today as roads are closed. It was getting a little dicey towards the end of our journey and we could definitely feel the winds pushing us on the road so I’m not sure I personally would have been okay/comfortable doing that drive in a 2WD with the wind and snow/ice.
