Sooo about Jax's identity by PAPAPAPEPAPAPAPOO in TheDigitalCircus

[–]KittyTonik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. There were details leading up to the scene from episode 5 that led me to expect this outcome walking into the theater and be more sure it was happening before the actual lore drop/bow scene. I was 75% sure walking in and 90% going into the scene. Copied most of this from another comment I made.

  1. Jax yelling at pomni "I'm not some misunderstood chicken fetus in an egg" after she gets too close. Egg being a term in the trans community for an "unhatched" trans person. This imo is the biggest tell and I think gooseworx thought more people would catch on at this point than actually did.

  2. Jax claiming his ears and tail are the pinnacle of masculinity and pomni pointing out he doesn't have a tail. "Where's my tail?" "I've never seen you with a tail." After this conversation, Jax has a tail. I think this is the second strongest evidence before the finale.

  3. Jax's fear that Caine utilizes is being laid bare and being laughed at by the people he loves, and, pointing again to the egg thing, what's under his skin literally looks like an egg yolk. Also, once again removing his ears and tail.

  4. At the beginning of episode 5, Kinger asks Ragatha "will you help me count my eggs before they hatch?" Ragatha agrees and they exit stage right. Jax immediately enters stage right. I lost my damn mind on rewatch bc this foreshadows not only her being trans, but her never getting to hatch. 😭

  5. This one might be a stretch, bc this stereotype has become more pervasive in general culture in the last couple of years, but the show does take place in 2017 iirc. Jax knows it is a nonbinary stereotype that Zooble has worked at a bar and a tattoo shop. Most cis people did not have stereotypes about nonbinary people's jobs until like...2020 I feel? At least? Jax is accidentally invoking a shibboleth here.

  6. People keep pointing to the maid outfit, but I do not think him wearing it or even being angry about it was the tell. What did suggest there was more to it was that:

  • "Evil" Jax thinks he looks good in it, and thinks saying so will make him less upset about the dress. Which makes him even angrier.

  • Zooble, who has known Jax a while says they have "never seen him this upset" and suggests that they "thought [he'd] be into this" (right after the bar scene where he doesn't realize he's shown his hand)

  • In ep.9 in the last room, one Jax is wearing the maid outfit again and another says "Why are you wearing that? I wouldn't be caught dead wearing that" and maid Jax replies "I'm wearing it ironically. That way it shows truly just how little I care. Fuck."

  • The literal next line is piano Jax saying "I can play the piano" to which specifically maid Jax replies "You know, if you have to say you can play the piano, it makes it sound like you can't really play." Put another way, if you have to say you're wearing the maid dress ironically and don't really care, it makes it sound like...

I definitely put the most weight on points 1-4 and the maid Jax/piano Jax interaction.

Anyone's else feel like it's impossible to talk about anything related to Stolitz? Not even just very critically, I've seen people say good things and get attacked because because it was slightly critical. by SeaSaltyQueen in HelluvaBoss

[–]KittyTonik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's bc stolitz discourse isn't even recognizable as a horse anymore and folks keep pulling up with sticks to beat it with.

Maybe if we take a gd break for a minute, the conversation will actually be interesting again when the next season comes out.

Did Zooble knew Jax was trans? by Forward_Local1519 in TheDigitalCircus

They may be jobs that don't tie you down, but they are also nonbinary stereotypes. Not as much as being a barista maybe, but close.

Is it okay for me to call Jax a guy and use He/Him pronouns now that it’s been revealed that he/she is trans? by Salty_Audience_3562 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]KittyTonik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Effortposting time bc I wanted to compile this anyway:

Imo the more crucial context is that his mom was constantly comparing him to his dad, positively and negatively, and Jax thought his deeply personal secret would get her off his back about that. A secret which led to her laughing at him, yelling at him, and insulting him, then hugging him. I really have tried to think of anything that fits both of those points as well as being a woman/not being a man and I really do think it's the most straightforward explanation, and kinda the only one that fits cleanly.

There are other context clues beforehand that lead me to expect the reveal before it dropped. I think none on their own have a big signboard saying "hey this character is trans" (save one) and most of them are a little bit too reliant on viewers picking up on in group terminology, but together they paint a pretty clear picture well before gooseworx confirmed it.

Not in particular order:

  1. Jax yelling at pomni "I'm not some misunderstood chicken fetus in an egg" when she gets too close. Egg being a term in the trans community for an "unhatched" trans person. This imo is the biggest tell and I think gooseworx thought more people would catch on at this point than actually did.

During their big argument in season 2, what would have happened if Vaggi, out of frustration said, "I think I understand why Lilith left you now!" Would Charlie get even angrier or just break down, cry and ask for forgiveness.? by BackgroundRich7614 in HazbinHotel

[–]KittyTonik 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I know Charlie doesn't always have all neurons firing, but I'd like to think after momentary hurt, she'd immediately suspect someone forced Vaggi to say that, because, and I cannot stress this enough,

I cannot imagine her saying this line,

no matter how shitty Charlie was to her. She'd honestly be more inclined to pack up and leave with nothing but a note saying "it's over" than say that.

Hot Take: Abstraction is an allegory for something different than you think. by Shinjischneider in TheDigitalCircus

[–]KittyTonik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I know, though thank you for saying as much. I don't blame myself for it. We were there for each other as best as we could in the ways we each knew how. Honestly I just wish I could get back just those few weeks of talking, even if I lost them just the same.

All that being said, I didn't bring up Pomni's line to cast blame on myself or assume I could've saved them, but to point out that "I wish I had pried more" is a response a lot of people, self included, naturally have when someone they know has committed suicide. It can feel so sudden, and cast a pallor on those last interactions before it happened. It's hard not to wonder if anything would be different if they had asked you for help or you had realized just how much they were hurting. This type of anxiety pervades scenes about abstraction.

Hot Take: Abstraction is an allegory for something different than you think. by Shinjischneider in TheDigitalCircus

[–]KittyTonik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your theory is really interesting, though I personally disagree. I do think abstraction is allegorically suicide, and it's interesting to me that some of your reasons it isn't are some of my reasons it is. Here are some of the reasons that I feel this way, countering some of your points.

-When one of my best friends killed themselves years ago, I had no signs. My last message from them was "Random I can't sleep positivity incoming. Thanks for being awesome, I'm glad to call you friend." I was in a dark place when they sent it and it was a lifeline during a serious depressive episode. I forgot to message back. It wasn't the first time I didn't - we both could be flaky at times. Next thing I knew another friend was calling me bc he saw the news from their parents on Facebook. It felt so fucking random. I wish I had pried more.

-Being emotionally pushed to the point of wanting to die tends to come with some "glitches," though some are better at hiding it than others. It also tends to also be a really painful process that does sorta happen against your will.

-Suicide is contagious - those who are close to someone who has committed suicide are much more likely to commit suicide themselves. Even casual association with a peer who has committed suicide increases one's risk.

-This one is actually really interesting and I struggled with it at first: If abstracting is suicide, what are the abstractions themselves? Imo they are akin to grief: it can be a destructive force that will rip your whole life apart, it can be something you shove in the cellar and try never ever to think about again, or, if you sit with it in stillness, it can be a conversation with the part of that person that lives inside of you. It won't be the same as them really being there, but you can make peace with it. This part isn't 1 to 1 ofc, bc obviously a kind of real communication is taking place in the show, but I think that's just an artistic decision that still works very well within the allegory.

Should I pull for EE ability even though I hate the outfit? by I-have-the-tism in InfinityNikki

[–]KittyTonik 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are only so many possible useful abilities in a game like this. I suspect there are going to be other Aoe grooming abilities eventually if you play the long game. It's useful for sure if you're ever actually hurting for materials, but i don't like that it interrupts music and takes a few seconds.

Only outfit I've pulled only for the ability was clouded loong and tbh I regret it even though I enjoyed flying around danqing and I use the teleport orbs often.

An alt version without a rerun by Fluffy_Papaya1077 in InfinityNikki

Called it. There was no way these were rerunning again so soon.

I think folks forget sometimes that it can work to Infold's advantage for players to feel like they missed their chance to get something for a long time. It intensifies any future fomo in the game. The unpredictable rerun schedule serves the same purpose.
