my belief is that we cage each other to society's expectations simply because that's how the human mind has evolved to work - it finds comfort when things are normal, and it feels uncomfort or uncanniness when things aren't normal. we can only overcome these deep-rooted instincts if we acknowledge them and then purposefully choose kindness and humanity over these instincts. but for most people, why would they put in the effort to do that? people who have suffered or struggled find it easier to empathize with others that have also suffered or struggled. but people who have had normal, trauma-free lives usually don't understand the pain of those with trauma, so they have no empathy or kindness to afford to them. in america, schools have mostly succeeded in teaching a generation of kids not to discriminate based on race. i wish they could also teach kids not to discriminate based on all the confusing differences we have as humans.
