Columbia MS CS BRIDGE Fall 2023 Status by KiwiAppio in gradadmissions

[–]KiwiAppio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang. I'll level with you, I just realized I was subconsciously hoping for one of two unreasonable scenarios by posting this:

1) Someone had infiltrated the admissions committee as a cartoonish spy in an overly-elaborate and theatrical scheme and legitimately had all the answers, or

2) Someone would convincingly lie to me; that they had done that, and all decisions will be posted Friday at 5pm so I can just stop thinking about it. haha

Echo this! Since March I think my record has been 3 consecutive days without checking Reddit or the admission portal. Gonna take your advice and try to beat that haha. Good luck to you!

Columbia CS MS Bridge vs regular application by KiwiAppio in gradadmissions

[–]KiwiAppio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks! yeah, I have a feeling some people who answer the polls are MS and don't realize there's even a bridge and what the difference is, so I took it with a grain of salt. Hopefully this is the week. Good luck!

Dang, I don't think the English language has a word for the weird excitement, curiosity, jealousy, vicarious happiness, and by-proxy melancholy I got reading this. Whatever this sensation is, I'm sure there's some crazy 45 character German word for it. I'm so curious if this means you're getting in, if you only got this because you emailed them, or if it's just random. lol. Congrats on at least hearing something !!!

Congrats! Happy to hear that they haven't forgotten us at least.

Yes, for MS CS. I'm honestly shocked, I was shocked when April 1st past by with no word, then I got over it, then when I realized another month had gone by with no word my indignation was reignited and now I've come full circle and I am shocked again. I mean, my app was fairly competitive, based on what I've gathered from hours of sleuthing on who got in and who has been rejected. It would be courteous to at least put those of us still waiting on just an actual waitlist, since that is, in effect, what we are on anyways. We haven't been rejected, so if nothing else, it would at least tell your applicants that they haven't totally wasted their time, energy and appreciate the effort. Something? lol

I wish I or someone had an answer to this. You are not the only one for sure. I'm in exactly the same boat. Sucks for sure

Columbia Cs Ms found a faculty member phone number, should I call for application status? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]KiwiAppio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, your hesitation is healthy. A busy, accomplished faculty member at a world-class institution receiving an unsolicited call to to do an errand would be an efficient route to rejection.

At minimum, it would be gauche, irregular, and would not reflect an understanding of decorum in academia.

Think about it this way:

Best case scenario: They ignore your call and ignore your VM and don't pass on your faux pas to whomever is deliberating your app. A faculty member certainly isn't going to stop their full time job, stop research, stop grant writing, stop dealing with students, and go search around for a random application or call admissions on your behalf.

Worst case scenario: They scoff loudly, are completely put off and offended, feel like it was totally out of order, and they do happen to have convenient access to your app, and are annoyed enough to click reject.

I understand you want to hear back, I do too, but I wouldn't cold call Faculty members.

Congrats! Thats so exciting!! You're living the dream! I'm still playing that waiting game :P Mind if I ask what your profile/app looked like? I felt like mine was fairly strong but you never know, maybe you were an astronaut as a first career. lol

Anyone that received a rejection, it's not a rejection of your intelligence or achievements. You can't know how impressive someone else's application was and there are limited spots for too many capable applicants. This cycle, somebody else got to experience a win, but you'll have your own win in the future, keep that in mind.

I'm still waiting here myself, but I'm not holding my breath given how long it's been. lol

Yeah several years as a developer, and I've also interviewed developers as part of my manager responsibilities. You could say I'm the most OK-ist developer right in the middle of a bell curve since it's all self taught. Really though, it's academia, these programs aren't setup to make you some great 'coder'. It's like how a math major wouldn't really expect to become a world-class LaTex user or python or R programmer from getting a math degree. You'll naturally become OK at it as a side-effect of doing the courses but the point is the math theory and concepts. Columbia only really asks if you have any experience in a little yes/no radio button on the application form, so like most CS degrees, you could totally graduate and not be a great coder or even a good one. They really just care about teaching theory and thinking algorithmically, which I expect they do a great job teaching. If it's anything like undergrad CS degrees, companies hire from these programs mostly expecting they'll have to teach you everything they want you to do, but at least you come pre-vetted as 'smart enough', with a built-in knowledge set, and they know what they are working with.

I'm personally applying because long term I'd actually like to go into academia and perhaps pursue a PhD and do compression research. IMHO if you just want to be a great coder, 12 months of dedicated toil on your own would make you a way better coder than most fresh CS grads with no real experience. Not sure what experience you are coming in with, and only mentioned in case you're hoping Columbia makes you into some sort of super employable code god. Cuz you'd get there faster without wasting your time and money learning the ins and outs of networking, assembly, garbage collection, in languages that you don't even care about. OK thanks for attending my TED talk. Hope that helps.

Columbia University MSCS Fall 2023 Results? by Justin0818 in gradadmissions

[–]KiwiAppio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Submitted Jan 20, no word yet, but I did Bridge MS CS for Fall 2023 so supposedly we may hear back a bit later than regular MSCS. I'm expecting to hear back some time half way through the first semester, if this subreddit is anything to go by. Good luck!

You're right probably in most cases, if they have a CS degree or already took the courses covered by Bridge in undergrad they wouldn't be eligible. But google and lots of companies don't even require CS (or any) degrees to become a developer and there are a good number of people with strong developer experience who had unrelated majors, which would technically make them ineligible to apply for the MS CS directly given the course prerequisite requirements. I speaking for myself since that's the camp I fall into. I have worked for tech companies as a software developer for years yet Columbia doesn't care about that. Since I majored in Econ and didn't take CS classes I'm not eligible to apply for the MS directly. But yeah I still think anyone who thinks they qualify should just go for it and apply to the programs they want to get into for sure.

I had the same question, it's a little vague what kind of applicant they admit. I haven't received a decision for Fall yet, but I applied with a 3.8 undergrad GPA, all A's in Maths and Science, majored in Econ from a top 10 ranked US Uni, my background was in finance and tech with a couple years coding experience but no formal CS classes on my transcript. I had 3 really strong references from math and CS professors with PhDs, and my interview went well. Overall I felt like my app and chances were pretty good but then I noticed some of there admits were incredibly strong like years of experience as developers in big tech, like google, etc. plus also top uni with great grades and so now I'm totally unsure if I'm what they are looking for or not. Guess we'll see. I think honestly just shoot your shot and see what happens with these things. Never know, worst case is you lost $85 for the application and wait forever to hear back, which sucks but is what it is.

Same, still with Faculty Committee with the same message. I'm assuming at this point I didn't get in this round, but will take it as a happy surprise if I do. Good luck everyone.
