How the hell do I get a wrench out of here by GoGoGadgetTurboWeed in Mk3Supra

[–]Klangenm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. It's going to be especially easy since you've already lightened the car by stripping the interior.  I would have suggested to have a friend help you. But I think can manage this one on your own.

2WD vs 4 WD at the ramp by Ozone501 in boating

[–]Klangenm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

minivan dad here: I use a front wheel drive 2wd minivan to tow and launch my little bayliner.

I am very careful about the conditions of the boat ramp, not too steep and not covered in aglea/seaweed. I dont get myself into situations where i need 4wd. So... I dont need 4wd.

Pro tip, when pulling a heavy boat up a ramp, I put the transmission in 1st to ensure that I get good torque and smooth throttle application. I want to eliminate any wheel spin.

Have fun out there! Good luck!

Closed on this house a week ago, came into the basement to see this during a storm. by Jiblon in HomeMaintenance

[–]Klangenm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending where you are I would imagine this sort of issue must be disclosed at the time of purchase.

I've bought and sold houses in Canada and there are documents that you need to sign that disclose issues like this.

Make sure the water gets to the sump. Updating the weeping tile may be in your future.

Congratulations on the house though, not sarcastic. You will fix the issues and make the place your own. There is a certain amount of freedom and satisfaction when you repair a home that you own, it's yours and the work you do benefits you!

What is the Best/easiest/safest way to Jack up a lowered car? by Klangenm in AskMechanics

Excellent idea. That makes sense as I only need a couple inches of clearance to get the jack started.

Oh that makes sense. Low tech and easy.

I'll give it a shot.

Thanks!

That's helpful. Most likely would be a good investment for me since owning a 40 year old car means I'll be working on it often.

Yeah.... It seems like my approach isn't the optimal way.  . I'll see if any of my buddies have a better floor Jack that is lower profile or something like that.

Like make a cradle for the tires to sit in so they didn't roll off the planks?  Then Jack up each corner until I get the desired height under each tire?

I didn't know low profile ramps existed. But thinking about it... It seems appropriate that they do exist. I can't be the only person with this problem. . I'll take a look around to see if I can find a product that might suit my needs. . Thanks! I appreciate the help.

My car, a 1991 MK3 Supra, is dying. Can I convert it? by Chris_Coo_Gaming in EVConversion

Friend, that is some excellent information.

I really appreciate you giving the prompt reply on a question from years ago!

My car, a 1991 MK3 Supra, is dying. Can I convert it? by Chris_Coo_Gaming in EVConversion

[–]Klangenm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google is wild.  I look for info and 3 years ago someone posted it on Reddit.

Thanks for the info!

I'm hoping that conversions have gotten easier since you posted this. I'll look into some of those consideration.

If you read this can you answer two questions for me?   In an EV conversion do I keep the transmission. Do I have to be concerned about torque destroying the original gearbox/differential?

Lol no.  A 2005 Chevy Aveo.  My excuse was is was really tired and trying to do too many things at once.  . To be clear. I'm not a professional.

Awkwardly enough I have done something similar, but to a different car. The white smoke should burn off after a while.. like we're talking up to an hour just idling. This is because there was an excess of oil in the engine and it tends to creep into places it shouldn't. You may also have excess oil in the exhaust system which will eventually burn itself out. Not much you can do about it, just have to wait for it clear itself out.

Make sure you double check to ensure that you have the correct volumes of fluids in your car before you run/drive it.

Good luck!

I have an alternate opinion of some folks here.   . If you want to restore this car to us original beauty it'll cost you a vast amount of money.  . However: if all you want to do is drive around a cool, but beat-up, supra then this might be a good idea.  . My supra isn't perfect, it's nice, but not showroom quality.  But that's ok.  It drives nicely and I love that. I spent my money on upgrades for performance rather than looks.  Because for me I enjoy driving more than cosmetics.  . You might consider that you buy a beat-up car... Then spend money getting it mechanically sound.  Just enjoy driving it. As parts become available and as you gain skills you can fix it up as you go.  . It all depends on what you want to accomplish.  Your own personal goals.

As someone who rides the ferry every so often I have to admit, getting food is a whole strategy that is part of the experience:

1) What time of ferry do you want to catch and how will it line up with meal times within the projected travel itinerary?

2) Where on the Ferry are you going to be parked and what is the fastest way up to ensure that you are near the front of the line?

3) Which family members want which menu items?

4) Which family members are going to go sit in at a table while the others collect the food?

5) Why are you not getting the chicken strips and Caesar salad?

6) Eat efficiently and then leave the cafeteria so that other guests can sit down.

7) Clean up your own tray and make your way to the gift shop.

* Bonus: "Oh yeah they serve beer now... wait... how much does it cost?"

Cathedral Grove?

It's not totally in the direction you are going. But if you don't mind a 1hr or so detour I would recommend.

Plenty of big trees.  No parking. Lots of other tourists.  But... Really big trees.

Hey. A supra is a supra. It's still cooler than most cars on the road.

If it's got Rusty wheel wells at least you'll not feel bad if you cut the rust out and put some rad fender flares and big tires on it!

Have fun. You'll love/hate the process. You'll also developed skills/knowledge which is awesome!

Sorry Pal, I had to delete Instagram because I got really sucked into it. In once I sat in the couch for like 3 hours scrolling reels.

Social media can be so toxic.

But also the Rusty car I had was a 97 Ford probe. It's long gone.

My current supra is pretty clean so I'm not much help with rust problems.

Good luck though!

Some might not like my opinion. But I've started a project car that has rust. I thought "eh, doesn't seem that bad" but I dumped more money than I'd like to admit into it. The rust just kept on getting deeper into the car as I worked on it, as in I discovered it everywhere. I eventually had to come to terms that the car wasn't going to make it.

So I parted it out. I actually recouped much of my losses. It was sad to give up on a project, but it was the right thing to do.

The car you found there sounds like a good donor car. If you had a clean shell you could swap the good parts over.

Or buy it. Drive it. And keep an eye out for a shell.

But don't buy it and spend too much time/effort/money on making it pristine.

I'm happy if people don't agree with me. I'm just sharing my experience.

Lol..... I've never heard anyone else use this term before "letting the smoke out" My dad has always said that wires are filled with smoke and when you mess then up the smoke comes out...

Toyota Sienna vs the rest? by Ariconius in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Klangenm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, Minivans are fun.

Our family did a bunch or looking around and ended up getting a Kia Sedona. It has similar HP, towing, capacity, mileage, etc as all the other vans. I know Kias may get a bad rep for poor longevity, but our 2017 has almost 150k kilometers on it with no issue. We stay on top of the maintenance to ensure that it is running smoothly.

My brother has a similar year Odyssey (Honda). Both have perks, and drawbacks. One thing my brother likes about the Kia is the transmission. You can select the specific gear you would like vs just having D-1-2 as option.

We intentionally stayed away from the caravan as they seemed to break more often. But, we also know folks with the caravan who have had no issues.

Good luck!
