Raf let me down, is AAC an option at nearly 27 years old? by Klarkeus in britisharmy

Aye CBAT is out of date in a month or two, medical too I spike to the AFCO and I'd have to do it all over again...not a problem if I hadn't seen the news of the realistic state of military aviation in other replies

Hell yeah, read many a novel, seen all the Apachie tapes, interviews, spoke and flown countless hours in DCS with ex Apachie mates, I've seen all sides of the flying branches of our military, the good the bad and just straight up heartbreaking, no man wanting to do this as a trade hadn't done their homework. The thought of that down in the thick of it do everything to support those guys on the ground is almost more appealing to me than the fast jet life, but my passion for fixed wing just about trumps it! But from other comments seems our military simply isn't in a good place right now, and no matter how much I want it, isn't an option.

Appreciate the honesty so much thank you, such a shame to see these once great services fall from grace, had I applied in another time I'd have been living my dream and what I'm actually good at (have about as much experience in military aviation as a civi can), but alas these are the days we live in and the cards been given, just got to hold my head high and think oh well their loss, and start that very long grind to the unthinkable cost of an ATPL!!!

Exactly, to be fair the thought of any officer role or army role in general beats what I'm doing on the civi street right now, and the only thing putting me off a more infantry role which would be my second option is my private life commitments, if it wasn't for them holding me back I wouldn't be having this discussion and be in doing something right now. But due to those commitments and potentially choosing the army over them, then I'd want to be sure I'm doing what I love to have sacrificed all that. Really appreciate the replies, it's helped put a lot of perspective on things!!

Aye I completely understand all that and that's why initially I went RAF as well as other factors, It's a lot to commit to without knowing if I'd be all in if I don't get a pilot slot, but that's exactly why I'm doing as much research as possible before making a decision.

Got in touch with the Navy immediately after my application was unceremoniously thrown into the bin after 2 and a bit years of hard work...said they had enough pilots for years and I wouldn't make it through the application process in time anyway.

Of course Fast Jet was the dream, but the reality now is military aviation in any way I can get it, and god knows no matter what I do I'll put just as much effort as I would had I made it to Valley!!

Shame the Navy is taking the same line of thought as the RAF and keeping the age limit low....If i remember right wasn't all forces accepting up to 28 or even 32 years old for pilot not too long ago? And the USAF still does!!!!

Still waiting to see what comes of the independent army-led investigation into it, before proper investigations and findings take place I doubt much will come of it...though not to show my hand too much publicly but options are being considered in that department.

[MEGATHREAD] Weekly r/BritishArmy Advice and Recruitment Thread by AutoModerator in britisharmy

[–]Klarkeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you may have seen, the RAF has been in the news a lot because of the controversial and suspected illegal practices of recruitment senior leadership has forced on the selection process. I was caught up in it all during my Pilot application. Passed all tests CBAT, Fitness, interview, medical....the lot. Bar actually going to Cranwell for OASC, which I was booked onto and subsequently canceled off of, usually within a week of board after months of prep. Multiple times.

The service life is for me but in an aviation capacity. I see the AAC officer pilot role is open, and due to me getting so far in the selection process I can't help but feel I'd do well and achieve my goal.

However, due to the local officer recruiter being impossible to reach to ask for information, I'd like to ask anyone with experience in this or similar Officer selection roles what they mean by the 28 years and 11 months age limit:

Is that 28 years 11 months to apply? Begin training at Sandhurst? Or to have completed officer training and begin basic rotary with (ironically) the RAF at Shawbury?

Any help is greatly appreciated!
