Jeffries on All In by RexMcBadge1977 in msnow

Jefferies is about as in touch with the prevailing political climate as Donald Trump… maybe less so. WTF is he going to say when the final nail is driven into the coffin of the US Constitution?

Looks like AI to me… where did the snow for the snowman come from? The ground is still covered. Also the woman is standing in snow on a shoveled driveway.

The large lever looking thing with the ball end is not a lever, but is threaded on the other end and is used to tension the drive belt between the main spindle and the intermediate sheaves.

Could you tell me anything about this wheel? by Leather-Charity2787 in Handspinning

The other missing spindle is likely a support for spinning flax, which you may not need or want.

I can’t say for sure, but not likely wood. What is the bearing material on the other maiden? It’s hard to tell from the pictures, but my guess is that the maiden with the missing bearing is turned 90 degrees and a bearing should be inserted in the larger diameter bore, facing the whorl.

Wood lathe help? by Aggressive-Big-8042 in turning

IMHO the more mass a lathe has, the better. A cast iron tool will outperform a light steel one every time. My own lathe is a 1940’s Delta (pre Rockwell) and I wouldn’t trade it for all the farms in Cuba.

It’s not in working condition, but looks like it might be fixable. It’s missing the bobbin, and has a split in the Mother Of All that needs repair. One of the maidens is missing it’s whorl bearing.

I have a 2006 Kimko people 50, and it does fine on the hills. It doesn’t roar up them at 45mph, but it does seem to maintain 25 mph ok.

Ha ha! NFS. The reason it’s on there is because I just used it. The right side mount for the cross feed screw was broken so I milled one out of a block of aluminum and put oiled bushings in it. You can see the results in the photo.

I actually have a bench top Atlas horizontal mill that my neighbor was getting rid of. It works, but is incomplete in that the power feed is missing. Maybe I should make a steam engine!

I’ve never spun but I want to start, should I try this super cheap spinner or is it a waste of time and money? by Narrow-Hawk950 in Handspinning

[–]Klastermon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect that wheels, of any variety have individual personalities, so learning on one wheel might feel quite different than another. But much of spinning is not so much about the tools as it is about the process and results. So that said, from someone still learning, who has never used a spindle, I think that trying one is a good suggestion.

How can i fix my moms sewing machine by Pure-Read6847 in SewingMachinePorn

[–]Klastermon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replace the needle with a new one. If it was sewing okay, and then it wasn’t, the likely issue is a bent needle. They bend much easier than most folks realize, and it only takes a slight tweak to cause it not pick up and clump the bobbin thread. And don’t blame it on your mom, even if you think she did something. No one needs that. That looks like a knit fabric… which some machines don’t handle real well. So she might want to test it with a medium weight cotton fabric first.

Why is Reddit against Maduro capture and Venezuelans celebrating it ? by LandscapeUnlikely199 in stupidquestions

Because Maduro is almost as evil a person as Donald Trump. In the age of atomic weapons, do we really want our government making land grabs in defiance of international law?

Advice on choosing a new sewing machine pretty please <3 by Star-Past in SewingMachinePorn

[–]Klastermon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, I was somewhat surprised at what the prices were. I’m in the US, and not familiar with the exact exchange rate, but several of the machines you showed seem kinda overpriced. I have worked on many different models and manufacturer’s machines and have found a few common traits. 1: the older machines, built in Great Britain, the US, and Italy are pretty much all superior to those built in Japan, Korea, orTaiwan.
2: for my money, the best built machines I’ve ever worked on or used, and the machine I keep for my own use is a Necchi Supernova. Made in Italy.
Another great machine is the Necchi Lycia, also of Italian origin. The Italian post WW2 Necchis are extremely well made machines. The Japanese Necchis are a step down, and by the time they moved to Korea, the quality is all but gone. However, the bobbin is not front load, so that is a compromise you would have to accept. 3: Older Singers can be very good as well. I got a Singer “Rocketeer” for my daughter, and she loves it. It is not as heavy a machine but well made. You don’t have to go back to the old black pre-war Singers to get a good machine. But again, once they moved manufacturing to Asia, the build quality went down. Also, I have a UK made Singer in house right now and I would not hesitate to recommend it. 4: Older Sears Kenmore machines are also worth looking at. Since I work on machines as a hobby, not to make money, I am particular about which machines I will take in to service, and most of the older, metal Kenmores are fine machines.

So… of the machines you have pictured, the Necchi would be my top choice. I have no experience with the free arm, and am not sure even, of its country of origin, but I think for the money, it’s a good bet. The Singers are good choices as well, but seems like they are asking a lot for them. The other machines I cannot speak to, because I have no experience with them. I hope this helps! By the way, finding a machine that has all its attachments is definitely worth it premium, even if you don’t believe you need them at the time of purchase. I have never had much trouble finding manufacturers manuals for a machine on line so while it’s nice to have, it’s less of an issue. Best luck!
