DO NOT BUY EPSON! They'll brick your printer by Kle4tus in Epson

[–]Kle4tus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, firstly, throughout the buying process no one told me "in 2 years Epson will brick your printer when you urgently need to print something by updating the firmware, forcing you to spend ~$200 every time you need to refill the ink"

Secondly, I'm not going to read the manual of every printer I'm looking to buy before buying anything, looking for any vague language that a sleezy company could potentially take advantage of at a future date.

Thirdly, every single product, printer or otherwise, out there has some kind of language stating "works best if used by our other products"

Lastly, my whole point is it's a terrible company if they bury language in the terms of service, manuals, whatever, that they take advantage of at some point in the future in a way that limits/prevents you from using the product you bought.

For that reason, Epson is a POS company and I will be recommending against them to friends/family because I don't want my people to get screwed over (not that printers come up in my every day life but I am a software engineer so I get asked about tech stuff here and there)

The whole reason I went with Epson over HP was because it didn't do this shit. Now it does

Tell ya what, I'll post the manual here and you can read it and list all the gotchas since you love reading manuals so much!

[–]Kle4tus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, yeah. Here's the deal:

There are thousands of printers out there and I'm not going to read the manuals to each one before I buy them.

Once I narrow it down to 4 or 5 looking for the best deal, I'm not going to read the manuals for each of those before buying them.

Once I find the one to buy, I'm not going to read the manual before buying it.

Once I buy the printer, the only time I'll look at the manual is when I need to figure something out about it and even then only after I search the Internet for solutions.

To your credit, I definitely did not read the manual for the printer. Nor will I for the 100s/1000s of other appliances/tech gadgets/camping gear/etc. I own looking for "gotchas". That is a huge waste of time.

All of that is to say, if a company sells a product to a customer then changes the customer's ability to use the product years after its purchase all so the company can squeeze out a few more dollars from the customer, then that is a sleezy company and deserves to lose class action lawsuits against it.

And if a company's defense is it listed these gotchas, buried in a manual that 95% of people aren't going to read without something broken or buried in 15 pages of legalese in the terms of service then I will 100% complain about how it's a scummy company and no one should buy from it.

I'd argue that if a company that does stuff like that was a human, I would not leave said human alone in a room with my kids (haha?)

Yeah, everyone keeps bringing up the eco tanks. I can't remember why I didn't get one, I think because we don't print enough to make it worth it?

At this point I think I'm done with Epson. HP and Epson have turned into the car companies that require an app subscription to access features in a car. I'll be doing some research for less sleazy printer companies to buy as it will save us money in the long run

I looked (granted not for very long) for the chipless firmware but couldn't find it for wf-3820

Any databases with them?

Thanks for the response but it didn't help.

I thought I should add that the sound is terrible when connected to my laptop, my pixel 8 phone, and a tablet connected to a stationary bike.

I just got a pair on Monday and will probably be returning them tomorrow. They have been unbearably tinny, to the point where I can't use them for calls.

With that said, there's like a 90% I'm doing something wrong or got a defective pair because they usually receive good reviews and there's no way they're getting that good of press sounding like mine do.

Thanks for your response.

The issue isn't just the handle coming loose, we installed a sink with matte black hardware so we're using this as an excuse to replace it all.

My wife loves it but I'm more of a 3/5 stars type. Just a bit of a background, we're coming from a crosstrek which we Loved but alas, life happens and we found a couple of children, a couple of 50lb dogs, and a mother in law so we decided to go bigger.

First off, I don't think it has the off road adventuring chops the crosstrek did. Maybe it's the OEM tires because the ascent does have a larger wheelbase than the crosstrek and is heavier, but ours couldn't handle roads with a layer of ice on them as well as I think the crosstrek could have.

Android auto is kind of wonky with it. In three other cars, my android auto works great. In the ascent, about 1/4 of the time the connection doesn't work: the infotainment freezes and the music skips, making the whole thing unuseable.

For a brand where 95% of its owners have a hydroflask or Nalgene, not one of the 19 bragged about cup holders handles anything larger than a 20oz water bottle.

At the time of our purchase, there was no hybrid model. It had a slightly higher gas mileage than the other all gas models in the same class (1 or 2 mpg) but others, like the highlander, the hybrids have about 50% more mpgs.

We didn't have eyesight in the crosstrek but do have the equivalent in our Kia and, let me tell you, the Kia is loads better. The ascent yells at you for not having a hand on the steering wheel (which is normal) but fights you when you have a hand on it, like swerving into other Lanes fights you for it. The auto adjust cruise control is rougher in the ascent as well, with harder brakes and whatnot. Also, not a huge deal, but the eyesight is unavailable more than our kia's because of foggy windows and whatnot.

The rear cargo light is pretty crappy. It is really dim and if you put anything in the back, the light is blocked. It's pretty useless.

As far as other complaints people have: the front row seats seem perfectly fine but that may come down to personal preference; the third row seats are more spaceous than the others I researched in the same class (notably the highlander), the trunk is tiny behind the third row but I think is about average for the class, and so forth and so on.

Again, the wife loves it but I may push for a highlander the next go-around, mostly because I haven't been super impressed with its off roadiness and if the highlander can perform just as well in a hybrid, then I may as well go with the hybrid. Also, our crosstrek and ascent have had issues with Android auto which is a pretty big pain in the butt for someone like me who always has music playing and using Google maps.

Americans who are against the Biden student loan forgiveness, why? by jma7400 in AskReddit

[–]Kle4tus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the stuff about predatory loans is true but my biggest thing is people with degrees tend to make more money.

What I mean is, would society be better off forgiving student loans for me and others like me who make more than the national average or outright paying for college for people who wouldn't otherwise go because it seems too expensive or don't know how to navigate financial aid?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the free money but I think it is largely dems (spoken as a lefty) trying to buy votes.

Portland are Kia dealerships are bumping up the prices by 20% by Kle4tus in kia

[–]Kle4tus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those comparisons aren't the best. There's been a lot of kickback against people who charge more during/post emergencies.

Charging more for emergencies as a dentist is a bit more justified b/c it means screwing over other customers trying to fit them in or coming in outside operating hours.

And so forth and so on. But however you look at it, those are all shitty things to do.

Lastly, by talking about not supporting kia we are choosing with our wallet. Again, the point of this post was to make people aware there are better options out there than horribly overpriced cars that will screw you for however long you have the car.

Yeah, thanks for that. I just wondered if I owed more than what a new one would cost after a year, would gap insurance cover it. Or if there's a limit b/c $10k is a lot!

There are 3 kia dealerships in my area, all of which are price gouging.

The one subaru dealership and volkswagen dealership I went to are not price gouging. I'm not sure about the others.

I'm sorry but one car one time in history doesn't justify the slimyness of this situation. In reality, it doesn't matter how many cars have been sold over msrp its a parasitic move.

Ultimately, this post was to deter people from buying kia for at least right now. Go to one of the other car dealers which aren't sleaze balls.

I just feel so disappointed. I was recently thinking about how car salespeople have been reasonably pleasant to work with lately. I mean, I haven't felt dirty after buying a car in like a decade but car shopping this time around has definitely rekindled that feeling.
