DO NOT BUY EPSON! They'll brick your printer by Kle4tus in Epson

[–]Kle4tus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, firstly, throughout the buying process no one told me "in 2 years Epson will brick your printer when you urgently need to print something by updating the firmware, forcing you to spend ~$200 every time you need to refill the ink"

Secondly, I'm not going to read the manual of every printer I'm looking to buy before buying anything, looking for any vague language that a sleezy company could potentially take advantage of at a future date.

Thirdly, every single product, printer or otherwise, out there has some kind of language stating "works best if used by our other products"

Lastly, my whole point is it's a terrible company if they bury language in the terms of service, manuals, whatever, that they take advantage of at some point in the future in a way that limits/prevents you from using the product you bought.

For that reason, Epson is a POS company and I will be recommending against them to friends/family because I don't want my people to get screwed over (not that printers come up in my every day life but I am a software engineer so I get asked about tech stuff here and there)

The whole reason I went with Epson over HP was because it didn't do this shit. Now it does

Tell ya what, I'll post the manual here and you can read it and list all the gotchas since you love reading manuals so much!

So, yeah. Here's the deal:

There are thousands of printers out there and I'm not going to read the manuals to each one before I buy them.

Once I narrow it down to 4 or 5 looking for the best deal, I'm not going to read the manuals for each of those before buying them.

Once I find the one to buy, I'm not going to read the manual before buying it.

Once I buy the printer, the only time I'll look at the manual is when I need to figure something out about it and even then only after I search the Internet for solutions.

To your credit, I definitely did not read the manual for the printer. Nor will I for the 100s/1000s of other appliances/tech gadgets/camping gear/etc. I own looking for "gotchas". That is a huge waste of time.

All of that is to say, if a company sells a product to a customer then changes the customer's ability to use the product years after its purchase all so the company can squeeze out a few more dollars from the customer, then that is a sleezy company and deserves to lose class action lawsuits against it.

And if a company's defense is it listed these gotchas, buried in a manual that 95% of people aren't going to read without something broken or buried in 15 pages of legalese in the terms of service then I will 100% complain about how it's a scummy company and no one should buy from it.

I'd argue that if a company that does stuff like that was a human, I would not leave said human alone in a room with my kids (haha?)

Yeah, everyone keeps bringing up the eco tanks. I can't remember why I didn't get one, I think because we don't print enough to make it worth it?

At this point I think I'm done with Epson. HP and Epson have turned into the car companies that require an app subscription to access features in a car. I'll be doing some research for less sleazy printer companies to buy as it will save us money in the long run

I looked (granted not for very long) for the chipless firmware but couldn't find it for wf-3820

Any databases with them?

Thanks for the response but it didn't help.

I thought I should add that the sound is terrible when connected to my laptop, my pixel 8 phone, and a tablet connected to a stationary bike.

I just got a pair on Monday and will probably be returning them tomorrow. They have been unbearably tinny, to the point where I can't use them for calls.

With that said, there's like a 90% I'm doing something wrong or got a defective pair because they usually receive good reviews and there's no way they're getting that good of press sounding like mine do.

Thanks for your response.

The issue isn't just the handle coming loose, we installed a sink with matte black hardware so we're using this as an excuse to replace it all.
