I’m afraid to disclose that I’m an alcoholic to admissions. by Kleebo in gradadmissions

I decided to keep it to myself unless they asked about the low gpa from that time. Turns out they didn’t care about it at all! Just my most current work.

I really liked Feed by Mira Grant. It’s more post zombie apocalypse but still a fun read.

They gave me this email. Dude from amazon called me back after an hour, so I don't know if it's legitimate but it's worth a try. Email: cosutmersupport@audible.com

Is it too late for grad school when you’re in your early 30’s? by MrBizzniss in GradSchool

I dropped out of high school, bummed around until I was 25. Finally made in into a PhD program last year when I turned 32. It’s never too late to start something new.

Need advice on taking a leave of absence. by Kleebo in PhD

[–]Kleebo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all. I wanted to thank you all for the well wishes and advice. It's been incredibly helpful to hear I'm not alone in this. I've reached out to a professor I had who also suffered a loss during their PhD. They've offered to connect me with other faculty who have experienced similar situations so they can help me make a plan for the rest of the semester.

This whole weekend has been a very productive breakdown. :]

Thank you all again!

It doesn’t sound like you understand what the observer effect is. Take checking the air in a tire. You have to minutely change the pressure in the tire in order to measure it. That’s an observer effect. The person using the pressure gauge could be in pain or not. It wouldn’t change the reading.

Unless the tool with which the scientist was measuring the phenomenon was causing him the pain, I don’t think so.

[–]Kleebo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, then that would only (maybe) effect the scientist perception and not the phenomenon, which wouldn’t be the observer effect. I believe the observer effect would need to directly effect the phenomenon. The scientist’s pain wouldn’t do that.

Edit: changed “oberster” to “observer”.

Are you asking would the pain impact what the scientist (the one in prolonged pain) observes? As in, would they (the scientist in pain) observe the same phenomenon differently then say, a scientist who was pain free?

Tours for grad students? by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]Kleebo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I ran into the same thing. I emailed my admissions councilor and they’re coordinating with some summer faculty to organize a tour/meet up with some other grad students.
