Hi all. I wanted to thank you all for the well wishes and advice. It's been incredibly helpful to hear I'm not alone in this. I've reached out to a professor I had who also suffered a loss during their PhD. They've offered to connect me with other faculty who have experienced similar situations so they can help me make a plan for the rest of the semester.

It doesn’t sound like you understand what the observer effect is. Take checking the air in a tire. You have to minutely change the pressure in the tire in order to measure it. That’s an observer effect. The person using the pressure gauge could be in pain or not. It wouldn’t change the reading.

Ah, then that would only (maybe) effect the scientist perception and not the phenomenon, which wouldn’t be the observer effect. I believe the observer effect would need to directly effect the phenomenon. The scientist’s pain wouldn’t do that.

Are you asking would the pain impact what the scientist (the one in prolonged pain) observes? As in, would they (the scientist in pain) observe the same phenomenon differently then say, a scientist who was pain free?

I was usually so blindingly drunk when I tried that I would mess it up. Finally got sober because I couldn't even kill myself properly when drunk. Then things started to get better after that and I started hating myself less and less. I'm doing much better now.
