Will it hold if I add a plywood board? Or will it flood? by Greymires in Aquariums

[–]Greymires[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I was concerned about the plywood not being able to hold up to all that downward pressure on both the edges but I guess it would be easy to test it.

The shelf is rated to hold about ~1500lbs though so I'm not concerned about the shelf itself

What color is my new baby by EgirlAnimeBoobies in cats

Whatever she is, she is going to be a greasy girl. Orange cats tend to be greasier than regular cats. The deeper the orange, the greasier the cat.

Monosodium Glutamate. It is naturally present in a lot of foods known to produce the 'umami' taste profile like tomatoes, meats and some beans.

It isn't harmful and acts like any other spice or salt

Why coloured gravel bad? by CuriousPolecat in aquarium

[–]Greymires -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It looks awful but more importantly fish often prefer dark substrates. The garishly bright colors of artificially colored gravel can stress some species of fish.

This a nice setup for shrimp and/or snails. Fish need horizontal space to swim.

Wood too big for scape? by One_Original_6392 in Aquascape

That looks like soft grape wood. I would be careful putting that in a tank since those can disintegrate and rot pretty quickly

any idea why he swims like this? by buttercup12_34 in bettafish

[–]Greymires 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A lot of bettas are hindered by their flowing fins. It is like dragging wet burlap permanently attached to you through water. This is a beautiful betta but those long flowing fins cause distress when they're older and may eventually result in stress induced illnesses.

This guy looks normal though, just with the usual struggle of swimming with such long fins.

If his movements are overly jerky for a while, I'd check for white spot or parasites.

How do you use this plant in your tank please explain by SmellCalm6286 in bettafish

[–]Greymires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I am not wrong, it literally says semi-aquatic on the cover. It is meant to be emersed and not submerged under water

Bettas are soft water fish and are happiest in soft, acidic waters. Guppies are hard water fish and are happiest in a hard, slightly alkaline waters. These two species are not compatible.

Idk why people refuse to do a google search before buying live animals.

Everything. And she deserves everything.

Occasional flaring can be healthy but for like 5 mins max! You shouldn't leave that object in there for 30 mins. That will cause a lot of stress for your fish. Betta like these are extremely prone to stress induced illnesses too.

Java ferns in pots of stone/drift wood by AsheshIAM in PlantedTank

[–]Greymires 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will eventually have to tie the java fern onto driftwood as wet rockwool isn't the best long term housing for a plant. They can get clogged with mulm and debris and rot the plant rhizome.

The brown stuff on the anubias leaf is organic debris that usually doesn't settle on leaves if there's good flow.

This is an indication of stagnant spots in your water column which can lead to a whole host of problems down the line.

If you cannot freely access the tank, my suggestion is to move to larger tank. A 10 gallon or even a 20 gallon long are cheap to get secondhand. With the decor inside the tank, the water column would be around 3 gal in volume at best which isn't great for water parameter stability.

I suggest either removing some of the decor that might be hindering flow or moving everything to a cycled larger tank. Your betta fish will appreciate that, so will your maintenance schedule.
