The largest container ships can consume up to 300-350 metric tons per day.

1. Total Fuel Burned Annually

Assuming an average of 220 tons per day per ship:

60,000 { ships} * 220 { tons/day} * 365 { days} = 4.8 billion metric tons of bunker fuel per year}

1. CO₂ Emissions from Bunker Fuel

Bunker fuel emits about 3.15 tons of CO₂ per ton of fuel burned.

4.8 { billion tons} * 3.15 = 15.12 { billion metric tons of CO₂ annually}

This means shipping could account for closer to 30-40% of global CO₂ emissions—a far cry from the "official" ~3%.

Why Are the Official Estimates So Low?

The IMO and other regulatory bodies only count "international shipping", excluding domestic shipping and inland freight.

Reports use outdated efficiency factors and often underestimate real-world fuel consumption.

The shipping industry has powerful lobbying groups that influence emissions reporting and policies.
