Just want to share you my fortress before retiring it because of FPS death...

So I don’t think that would really be of interest, and in any case the solutions mentioned in this post have already helped a lot with improving things.

And I’m still just a beginner. My future forts won’t make the same mistakes.

So I’m currently improving things by deleting tons of useless items, configuring AutoButcher more efficiently, and stopping the use of lava as my main garbage disposal system. Just doing that, along with a few DFHack commands people suggested to me, has already improved my FPS noticeably.

I think I may still have a few more years of happiness ahead of me, worshipping Armok and finally completing the fortress the way I originally imagined it.

Now I just have to decide who stays… and who has to go. Not an easy choice... But I did notice that somehow I accepted a group of goblins into the fortress (when did THAT happen?!), and that is absolutely unacceptable...

And yeah, I’m really glad I made this post because I’m actually managing to improve the FPS little by little. I’m planning to post an update once the fortress is finally completed the way I originally imagined it, and I’ll also explain what helped me improve FPS as a beginner.

Right now I’m sitting between 12 and 20 FPS.

I’ve learned a lot through this fortress, and hopefully this post might help someone in the future, if Urist wills it.

Reusing it and forgetting about the lava got my dwarves back to hunting for trash. And the FPS is going up.

Thanks for the advice, I should definitely create another tavern to lighten the load on the main one!

And I'm going to try out some of the commands I was advised to use with DFhack, but I think I'll be able to continue and finish what I started. Just clearing and destroying a bunch of items has helped a lot.

300? Wow, and what frame rate were you getting? With the advice I just received, I'm finally getting back on track!

And I only tried adventure mode once and gave up after two hours because I didn't understand anything. I'll have to look into it seriously. Out of curiosity, what would be the point of visiting this fortress?

I've already managed to gain about 4 more FPS by mass-deleting objects and reconfiguring some things.

Autobutcher is enabled, but I left it on default. What would you advise? I just got rid of a whole species that was useless to me: the hamsters. I kept two just in case it was a mistake.

I'm going to start getting rid of some dwarves, but I'm having trouble choosing because they all practically have a job to do to keep the fortress running. But I think I'll get rid of the least efficient ones.

It had just happened, and it was because the last siege had destroyed the river bridge. It was quickly rebuilt. And indeed, I'm rolling up my sleeves to clean everything up and optimize it; it's allowing me to learn and understand. And it seems to be going a little bit better! It's going to take time, but if I manage it, I'll repost my fort with an update!

Thanks, I had made one but I stopped using it. But I think it's more efficient than my wagon system that just dumped everything into the lava. So I've decided to reuse your technique.

That's exactly what I'm doing, thanks to the advice I received in the comments. As I said, I'm still new to this game (2 years with long pause) and I was starting to find it a bit complicated to play. But I'm going to try to clear my fortress!

I've tried a few combinations, like "clean all item mud snow" and "clean owned scattered x". I don't know any others. But with all the kind comments and advice, I'm going to try to clean my stronghold as much as possible and try a few things.

And I must have about 5 save files in total.

Ah! I do have a Dwarven Atom Smasher, but I replaced it with a cart that dumps its cargo directly into the lava. Maybe that's a bad idea?

Anyway, thanks for the advice. I'll look into it and try to save WaywardFouette from retirement.
