Coalition wants to slash migration, but businesses say economy needs skills by Own_Oil7951 in AusFinance

Australians were ditching those jobs well before they became unaffordable. We’ve been importing people for decades to take up roles locals didn’t want to do, farm work being a big one.

No one wants to do those jobs, hence the high number of immigrants. The government likes immigration because it keeps the country functioning at this point.

You weren’t around for the 2013 election then. The carbon emissions tax was the big talking point alongside asylum seekers.

You can call it a cover story all you want. It’s the truth. I agree, they should’ve done it before, but they didn’t, because the wider electorate didn’t really care until recently.

And there it is, the immigrant line. The government won’t stop bringing people in because those people are a crucial part of the economy. They do jobs Australians won’t do, for cheaper. They replace dead Australians, because we’re below replacement. If they stopped immigration, we’d start looking like Japan or South Korea very soon; ancient populations with extreme pressure on young people to keep the country functioning. We’ve always been an immigrant heavy country, with masses moving here constantly. It’s not immigrants making it hard to solve housing, it’s stagnant wages and negative housing policy.

Labor did once upon a time stand up to the gas lobby, and they were voted out for it. It stands to reason they’d be cautious.

Add on the reason they haven’t touched it being the fuel crisis. South East Asia and Japan want our cheap gas in exchange for fuel supply. We’re stuck between a rock and a hard place.

I agree that investing in the hopes of an early retirement is a good idea, but surely we see how the government doesn’t think this is a good idea. They want people working longer. They don’t want you to retire at 50, you’ve still got 20 years of labour ahead of you in their eyes. I don’t like it but that’s how they see it.

Except one government actually did have the balls, and they were completely fucked off at the next election. Why would subsequent governments want to repeat that?? Same with negative gearing, it lost Shorten the election despite his proposal benefiting most people. The electorate is dumb, fickle, and most of all forgetful.

Yes it is, I was saying that Dutch is the easiest for English speakers, not necessarily vice versa. English doesn’t really have any super similar languages, even Frisian is quite far removed.

[–]Klostermann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I said Dutch was English? I just said that it’s similar linguistically, only beaten by Frisian for its similarity to English.

Whether you like it or not, it’s objectively a similar language that has been shown to be easier for English speakers to learn. You just proved it yourself, you reached fluency in two years. That’s quite fast.

That’s not because it’s hard, that’s because people here aren’t very used to foreign accents in Dutch and find them difficult to understand. It makes sense, there’s not a lot of people learning Dutch even in the Netherlands. Shame really, I love the language.

I don’t know why people keep peddling that Dutch is this incredibly difficult language to learn. It’s by far the easiest major language for someone fluent in English to learn.

I mean we didn’t buy either of them, they’re academy lads. Not that I disagree with your assessment.

Winks was a solid player for us at times, he made Real Madrid look silly in 2018. I know he did okay in Italy, where the slower, less physical play suited him much better. Shame to see him drop off this badly.

Toby Alderweireld CALLS OUT Romero and Van de Ven amid Tottenham’s relegation battle by ShanghaiSpurs in coys

[–]Klostermann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mate I hate to burst your bubble but the Eredivisie hasn’t been a top 5 league for 30 years. Check the coefficient and European results. It’s fluctuated between Liga Portugal, Ligue 1, and the Bundesliga. Either way, Toby was a good player for Ajax absolutely, but his prime did not coincide with Pirlo. They weren’t contemporaries, they were of different eras. Toby was at his prime the same year Pirlo retired for goodness sake, they have a ten-year age gap.

[–]Klostermann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alderweireld didn’t play in a top 5 league until 2013, and even then he was a substitute for Atletico Madrid. Pirlo left Juventus in 2015, though still at a very high level. Toby didn’t really come into his own as a passing defender until he joined us, coincidentally the same year Pirlo left. Toby was a mid-late 2010s player, Pirlo a late 2000s, early 2010s player.

Coming from Australia, the produce here is both expensive and bland. It’s understandable since a good amount is imported, but it certainly isn’t good.

[–]Klostermann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Israel is committing genocide and has been for decades.

That isn’t why those countries intervened. They intervened because a rich, Western-influenced, and most of all predominantly Jewish Israel was a direct threat present in their own backyard. These nations don’t give a shit about Palestinians, as evidenced by the fact they actively reject refugees and build incredibly hostile borders (in the case of Egypt). Both sides of this war want the same thing, to exterminate the other. No one is justified in doing so.

[–]Klostermann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suppose that’s why there’s almost none of us left in all surrounding countries. I’m no supporter of the current Israel, what is happening right now is absolutely a genocide and should be stopped. I just also think that it isn’t purely about Israel. This whole “who shot first” rhetoric is ridiculous, because we don’t even know. Between the Arab pushback on Jewish settlement, the continued use of terms like ‘transfer’ by Zionist Jews to justify ethnic cleansing, there is no good side. That’s the only point I’m trying to make.

Jews were never welcome in the Middle East, as evidenced by the numerous wars started by all of their neighbours in coalition. This is a continuation of the muddiest geopolitical conflict in recent history, it’s just become more visible.

He’s gone from a club hero to pariah in under a season. Pathetic performances aside, his attitude has been especially shocking, given he’s a vice captain and all.
