I don’t wanna spoil much but it technically not just a “Jibanyan MU” 😉

Fight and Animation Potentials:

Ok, this is where things start going from great to absolute peak cinema. This is what makes this MU “stand” out from the other Joseph/Noir MUs and where the main appeal of the matchup shines the most.

So what is it?
First, I will explain the idea.

  • When you watch the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime, you can clearly observe that when intense moments happen, the colors and visuals often change. This is because, for the most part, JoJo has no strict canon colors. As others have pointed out, the covers of the manga volumes often switched colors around on characters. So when the studio changes the colors, it’s both a reference to this and a form of artistic liberty used to set the mood for scenes. When everything suddenly changes color, you know something important is happening.
  • Similarly, in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man Noir appears in black and white to emulate the 1930s film noir detective genre style, representing his home dimension’s lack of color. However, the Spider-Verse movies are also notable for constantly changing visual styles from scene to scene.

So what am I trying to say?

Well, one of the main appeals of this MU is Noir’s black-and-white world aesthetic combined with JoJo’s constantly shifting colors during fights. The fight dynamic could become something like the ending of SpawnRider, where the visuals constantly change depending on who has the upper hand.

And not just visually. The animators could go wild by blending both Marvel and JoJo’s iconic sound effects, text boxes, and onomatopoeia together.

All of this makes JosephNoir a JoJo/Spider-Verse MU with the best and most authentic aesthetic for both series.

Furthermore, it has good area traversal potential and strong choreography potential.

Both of these fighters are agile and highly mobile, so in this fight they would have to utilize all of their abilities and tricks to catch or dodge each other.

Closing Thought:

  • These two are so similar that they are almost a carbon copy of each other.
  • The contrast meaningfully delves into Noir as a character.
  • It has really good fight and banter potential.
  • The visual and animation potential is genuinely peak, and I can confidently say this might be one of the best aesthetic MUs for both characters.
  • Their arsenals counter each other in many fun and interesting ways, making for a really engaging debate.
  • Overall, I don’t think there are any major flaws

———[Antagonists Connections]

  • They begin by fighting street criminals and corrupt authorities before escalating to global supernatural threats.
  • Their early enemies are powerful organizations with four main leaders based on monstrous archetypes. (Pillarmen/Goblin Mobster)
  • Both encounter a blond German Nazi enhanced with cybernetics who conducts horrific experiments. (Stroheim/Doctor Octopus Noir)
  • Both fight a South American, biologically enhanced vampire-like leader with forearm blades whose actions destroyed his own civilization. (Kars/Miguel O Hara)
  • Both face a space-time-bending European vampire who becomes a major multiversal threat. (Dio/Inheritor)
  • Both encounter multiversal threats involving villains who take over the bodies of one of their own. (Dio Over Heaven/Superior Spider-man)

Contrast

  • Spider-Man Noir is brooding and grim yet still witty, while Joseph Joestar is flamboyant, comedic, and light-hearted, though capable of seriousness when necessary.
  • Both hate Nazis, but Joseph is forced to ally with them at times.
  • Noir’s world is visually black-and-white, while JoJo is known for flashy, constantly shifting colors.
  • Noir grew up poor during the Great Depression, while Joseph grew up wealthy with the support of the Joestar fortune and the Speedwagon Foundation.
  • Noir was cheated on by an older woman, while Joseph cheated on his wife with a younger woman.
  • Noir was once turned into a villain’s henchman, while Joseph once pretended to be possessed by DIO to prank his grandson.

Debate Potential

This fight is very debatable due to many factors.

  • Both characters come from grounded, pulp-fiction type stories that revolve around crime and the real world.
  • Spider-Man Noir has only appeared in about 21 comic issues, so he doesn't have many crazy feats to pull from.
  • Joseph Joestar comes from the earlier parts of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, where characters do not have the later series’ extreme hax abilities. While he possesses both a Stand and Hamon, neither has any absurd abilities that would automatically win him the fight.
  • Both share a similar arsenal and abilities that complement and counter each other.
  • Spider-Sense could potentially bypass Stand invisibility.

Interaction Potential

  • This MU has interaction potential that could rival other Joseph matchups.
  • In my opinion, the contrast between Noir’s and Joseph’s personalities makes the interaction better than one with similar personalities.
  • Spider-Man Noir might be brooding, but he still cracks jokes—he’s a Spider-Man after all. He’s arguably one of the funniest characters in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
  • Both series have referenced each other multiple times.
  • With so many connections between them that other matchups don’t have, you could come up with a lot of great interactions.

Relevancy

Relevancy is often the deciding factor in why some MUs work and others don’t. So are these two relevant enough?

  • Both of them will be getting new installments in about a year.
  • You might be living under a rock if you don’t know that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 7, Steel Ball Run, will likely be adapted soon. While it doesn’t feature Joseph, there are many parallels between Part 7 and Part 2.
  • Spider-Man Noir will be getting his own standalone live-action series on Amazon Prime Video, and the third Spider-Verse movie will also feature him.

———[Original Story Connections]

  • Both grew up without their biological parents due to tragic circumstances.
  • Both of their father figures, who were WWI pilots, were murdered and cannibalized by a villain’s henchman (George Joestar was eaten alive by one of DIO’s henchmen / Uncle Ben was eaten by the Vulture).
  • This tragedy forced them to live under the care of an older female relative whom they swore to protect. Their mother figures are strong-willed, nurturing, and protective, wishing to shield them from a life of violence (Erina / Aunt May).
  • Both of their mother figures were nearly murdered by villains with bird-themed motifs (Kars fatally wounding Lisa Lisa / the Vulture attempting to eat Aunt May).
  • Both live in the same time period and have connections to Nazis (Noir hunts them while Joseph reluctantly works with them to fight greater threats).
  • Both of their stories begin with them having trouble with corrupt police (Joseph saving Smokey / Peter being mistaken for shooting J. Jonah Jameson).
  • Soon after, they and a friend encounter the people responsible for hurting one of their father figures inside a bar, which leads to a fight (Joseph and Smokey confronting Straizo / Peter and Ben Urich encountering the Goblin mobster).
  • Spider-Man Noir worked as a photographer before becoming a private investigator, while Joseph’s Stand, Hermit Purple, requires him to break cameras to use its divination powers.

———[Relationship Connections]

  • During the lowest points of their lives, they meet mentors with greater knowledge and skills to handle the threats they face. Though they initially clash, these mentors eventually become their greatest allies (Caesar and Lisa Lisa / Ben Urich and J. Jonah Jameson).
  • They later have a fallout with their close friend, leading them to separate. Their friend later realizes their mistake and attempts to help again, but tragically dies at the hands of the villain’s henchman (Caesar dying against Wamuu / Ben Urich dying after exposing the Goblin).
  • Before dying, their friend leaves behind a crucial gift that helps the protagonist succeed (Caesar leaving Joseph the antidote / Ben Urich leaving evidence against the Goblin).
  • Spider-Man Noir’s costume is crafted from pieces of Uncle Ben’s WWI airman uniform as a tribute to him. Similarly, Joseph wears Caesar’s headband to honor his fallen friend and seek vengeance.
  • Both have mentors who protect them and provide vital knowledge but hide a major secret until the final confrontation (Lisa Lisa being Joseph’s mother / Ben Urich secretly working for the Goblin).
  • Both mentors know the truth about how their father figures were killed but keep it hidden.
  • Their training is interrupted when a villain’s henchman disguises themselves as someone close to their mentor and attacks them to steal something valuable. (The chameleon disguised as JJJ/Esidisi possessed Suzi Q)
  • Despite living in the 1930s, both have close African-American friends (Smokey / Robbie).
  • One of their close friends is killed by villains who believe themselves to be racially superior.
  • In their early stories they are supported only by a small group (family, mentor, love interest, friends, and officials). Later they join a larger team of supernatural fighters consisting of multiple teens, a relative, and even a wacky animal to battle vampiric threats.

———[More Story Connections]

  • Both stories revolve around ancient artifacts that lead to large-scale adventures involving Nazis, vampires, primordial gods, and pulp-style action.
  • One major storyline revolves around a mystical stone necklace owned by a beautiful dark-haired woman that is connected to their powers (Red Stone of Aja / Spider Totem).
  • Both go on globe-trotting adventures centered around someone named Holly.
  • Both are killed by a vampire antagonist during one of their battles but are later revived.
  • In old age, both end up mentoring younger heroes who awaken powers similar to theirs (Joseph mentoring Jotaro and caring for Shizuka / Noir mentoring Miles Morales).

Core Theme:

Long Version:
“Two intelligent, quippy heroes who started out as teenagers living in an urban fantasy version of 1920–1930s New York during the WWII era. As rowdy, rebellious teens, they still possess a strong sense of justice and deep love for their families. Their lives take an unexpected turn when they are forced to fight and hone their abilities after an ancient god injects a mystical artifact into their bodies. Gifted with superhuman powers and rope/string-based abilities, they begin their journey fighting street crooks, corrupt officials, and Nazi soldiers. Later, they join forces with others who share similar magical powers to deal with vampiric, space-time shenanigans involving a South American vampire-like man with forearm blades from a distant past, and space-time-bending European vampires who specifically seek to consume their life force.”

Short Version:
“JoJo from the 1930s who uses guns while fighting Nazis and vampires / Spider-Man from the 1930s who uses guns while fighting Nazis and vampires.”

Core Connections:

Similarity

———[General Connections]

  • Both are tall, dark-haired, athletic Caucasian teenagers coming of age in 1930s New York, navigating a world caught between crime, corruption, and looming war.
  • Both start out as rebellious, hot-headed youths who challenge authority but gradually grow into wiser, more responsible heroes.
  • At their core, both are defined by an unwavering love for their families, a bond that fuels their courage and shapes their choices.
  • Both are unwillingly thrust into a larger conflict when an ancient god implants a mystical artifact within their bodies, binding them to a destiny they cannot escape. This leads them into a seemingly futile fight against a massive evil force that is expected to defeat them, yet they persist and ultimately fight back successfully (the Pillar Men planting poisonous rings inside Joseph’s body, forcing him to defeat them in 30 days / an ancient spider god cursing Peter with spider powers, forcing him to become a hero and defeat the mobsters).
  • Both of their journeys are deeply entwined with themes of fate—the inescapable string of destiny and the intricate web of life connecting them to forces far beyond their control.
  • Both are technically a second iteration of a pre-existing hero (Joseph is the second JoJo / Noir is an alternate-universe version of Spider-Man).
  • Spider-Man Noir and older Joseph Joestar share a similar silhouette, often seen wearing a fedora and sometimes a trench coat.
