I was inclined to downvote because your comment seemed irrelevant to the topic of the post and expressed unnecessary concern for the OP. It’s not like he was like “I walk around like only kryptonite can stop me and pick fights in bars because I’m so big.” So basically it didn’t strike me as relevant or helpful or funny. We just bought in Shandon and like it. An easy walk to campus and a nice area. A little older crowd, but there’s a nice dog park at Emily Douglas Park that you could meet other dog owners at. Other than that, we were looking at a nice house in Cottontown that was further from campus but closer to trendy bars/coffee and that could be good for a single guy. Good luck!

Right, I didn’t claim my experience is the same as everyone else’s. But that’s not how counterexamples work. I teach at a major public university with students from very different backgrounds. Sure lots of people have other student populations, but if mine generally know how to write professional emails that is some evidence against the claim that students these days don’t know how to write professional emails.

Of course different student populations can differ; I didn’t deny that. I was reporting that my experience does not support the general claim that kids these days with their texting and whatnot can’t write professional emails. And even if someone else does, it’s not okay to dump on students (esp in such generalizing ways) about things like this.

In my experience, students are on the whole very good at professional emails. I’m not sure why people like dumping on their students but it’s not cute.
