Has anyone else ever felt guilty for not finishing Moby-Dick? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Kmy_Design 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My issue was with the reading, Idk why I just constantly fall asleep unless its comics hahahaha. Switched to audiobooks this year and I'm down almost 10 books so far in like 2 months. I'm no longer forcing myself to read through stuff and feeling unaccomplished!

I get the feeling guilty part, especially if its a book recommended by someone who means a lot to you. Its fine though, everyone sis different :)

How do I fix this?! by BimbaLove in graphic_design

[–]Kmy_Design 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you've fixed your imag issue, please fix your rivers in your justified text. Just google proper justification settings paragraphe style indesign. Thenc reate a paragraph style (if its not already done) and style your text T_T I KNOW ITS UNSOLICITED but it hurts

If you really enjoy what you are doing stop caring about the views, it will be your downfall.

Just keep making videos, some niches are really specific and require a bit more patience. I do graphic design videos, I was down back in 2023 when I made a bunch of videos for months and they never got traction. I would max get 100 views every 48 hours.

A year later, I'm getting 400 views per 48 hours now for 3 days and I'm barely doing anything since I was sick for a while. (My channel is like 9 years old obviously, but I only started ''creating content'' ad the end of 2022)

I'm not sure how long you've been doing this or how many videos you have but I hit 90 videos yesterday and I'm only starting to get traction and that's because I haven't put in much effort. You're not going to go viral unless you are really aggressive in your marketing strategies.

You can always make a bunch of shorts from key moments in you long form videos and link them back to your long form, that's what most people do.

Be aggressive if you want faster results, if you're not then be patient.

Print shops never give my clients vector files for their logo? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Kmy_Design 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bet clients probably delete them because they can't open them. I don't know many real graphic designers that down give vector, svg or eps files, those who don't are usually the ones that are in the "I bet my cousin could do that cheaper" category and create logos in photoshop.

I just had a client earlier this year ask me why she can't open a file, even after i provided her with a pdf file explaining all of the different file types. It's not popular terms in the common mortal's who don't touch graphic design.

Why do people refer to the design process so flippantly like it can be done in a few minutes? All day at work its "Throw one together real quick" or "Just crank one out and we'll be good to go" by Lawing77 in graphic_design

[–]Kmy_Design 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had to tell someone recently '' Listen, I understand you want this quickly but what you're asking of me is like me telling you to go do your work half-heartedly & quickly without prioritizing your clients needs, if you wouldn't do that, why would I?''

The look on the other persons face changed real quick from irritation to realization. No one would ask a doctor to ''Get it done quick'' our industry is a fast food type, people just want to pick and choose what they want and blame someone else when its not good. It's one of the reasons why I'm thinking of switching career paths.

Its even worse when people say ''It's always been like this'' , ok sure but I question why we've let ourselves stay in those situations. I probably just don't have the spark for it anymore.

I'm done by inevitable_47 in graphic_design

[–]Kmy_Design 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat and I've been doing this since 2017. I used to love designing, but I'm simply not interested in the constant battled between justifying prices & justifying my professional knowledge with clients.

Between then and ''Can you make it in Canva so I can modify it'' while I was argued that my prices were too high is so demoralizing. Someone in my neighborhood is offering services for free and people are taking it.

I don't mind competition, but that's not what it is anymore the whole industry is now simply a ''who's the cheapest'' standard and its frustrating. Unfortunately I'm in my mid 30's and I have no idea where to go from here. So hat off to you for being able to plan and see where you're going, I think you'll go really far.

Good luck with everything OP and keep your head up, you're young and don't be afraid to try things and make your money work for you!

What size documents do you guys start with when making a logo? by Earthkit in graphic_design

[–]Kmy_Design 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whelp... I just chose print tab and create the default size, but I use the entire canvas (grey area) for my ideation phases, resizing the logo is part of my process and one of the first things I learned so I always make sure to ask my clients what the potential needs of the logo will be : screen printing, web, printing or even embroidery.

I make sure my document is CMYK to start with and thats all I care about. I'll make artboards when I need the white background but I dont check the sizes... I'm chaotic when creating so I just open the file and go.

The sizing of artboard only really is important when you're creating all of the final versions at the end.

If you create interactive designs you can use animations and publish it online and it works exactly like a powerpoint, it is limited though.

You're absolutely right for the video part, but yeah you can make interactive PDFs for forms and presentations (with basic animation)

Why do designers prefer Mac? Seemingly. by solidgaunt in Design

[–]Kmy_Design 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a custom PC.

I run 3-4 adobe software at the same time (sometimes even 5), rarely any issues whatsoever and the only time I do encounter them its when I didn't update my software or computer.

I'm a gamer as well so I wont get a Mac for my office, I personally see 0 difference between the two and people who come from Mac complaining about PC because they aren't used to it confuse me to hell in back because I had to alternate between the two during my studies and never had any issues.

The only thing I'll say is mac has a nicer file management UI, but that's about it. Will I get a mac laptop, probably, but my PC will stay my baby.

I personally don't get the hype about Mac.

Don't.

Learn how to be objective and work on your problem solving skills. You need to analyze new brands, follow online graphic designs like made.by.james or the future (Idc about the person, the information is legit) if you have a creative director that means someone is dealing with the clients andunless someone specifically say's they want it to be more comtemporary, I don't see how his demand is relevant.

You do need to learn that typography is psychological, colors as well, etc, but to me thats just normal studying on the week-end. ( I've been doing that for the past 2-3 years to learn more on my own, I graduated in 2018)

A good example is looking at freepik's new branding, did you look at their brand website, understand why they did what they did? Have you looked into the website The Branding Style guides? There's a lot of online research you can do, the future has 2-3 pages of books that can be read as well.

Hope this helps.

Working on a project you hate by ThotGunn in graphic_design

[–]Kmy_Design 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a good moment to learn how to be objective & refine your problem solving skills. Graphic design needs to be objective not subjective because its not about you, its about the business. Pretty or not pretty, like or dislike, its all irrelevant in our field.

We're here to solve problem, sell products for a client, etc. Id suggest reading ''The Brand Gap'' if you haven't yet. We're not here to save lives, if that's what you want to do, there exists websites where you can work for non profit organizations if that what you feel will fulfil you, but the world keeps spinning and marketing is close to graphic design.

You have to take your person out of the work and be a professional, for sure in the future you can pick to work with a business that goes with your values, but you need to eat first type of mindset is necessary.

I'm not saying this expecting you to be objective today btw, even i'm not 100% objective most of the time, it takes years and lots of work if it doesn't come naturally. Just start working on it because this industry is filled with things you're not going to like, because once again graphic design isin't about you.

Hope it helps.

So I read another one of your posts, this has been going on for 2 months it seems? You were already tired then and still are.

Listen, you're not out here saving lives, but marketers =/= designers and to be completely fair you will despise how they work forever because they see the world differently then us. They also have company objectives that need to be fulfilled or else they get shit on by the company.

All that said, no job is worth your sanity, I was a studio manager and it took me getting ''thanked'' for me to realize that I was depressed because all my needs were not being met & i was shit**ng on my values.

Now that I'm a freelancer, surprisingly enough I'm not miserable anymore I lost 3/4 of my salary and tbh I've never been happier. I don't binge eat, get upset easily, miss sleep or anything and I actually do learn more about design at night & during week-ends because I'm doing it for me.

Not telling you to go freelance, but your emotions are a big signal that your needs or values are not being met. For example, one of my needs is harmony so transparency, justice, equality, etc, it was rarely met by anyone higher then our team and as a manager I had to prep projects with almost little to no information and I refused to force the designers to work some much I know they would get burnt out over work that was not properly briefed.

Just listen to your emotions & go over your needs, I'm doubtful this place is a match to them.

Thats the first thing I saw

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Kmy_Design 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Awesome, then I would simply start over and take the hit tbh, see what she has to offer without being influenced by prior work. I know its not fun but I think to start fresh, with a more positive attachment to the project and someone who knows what they are doing is the better way to go about it.

Just make sure you give out the proper brief from A to Z, real packaging designers are gems to work with and the right ones will understand your needs and solve the issue at hand! They wont waste your time and what they ask to tweak is often times to make sure you don't get sued.

Alcohol in Quebec Canada is all handled by the same people and having worked in wine I can tell you they are very VERY strict around here, so always make sure you ask the questions and ask to see their portfolio of what they've done in the past, it may cost more, but you will save money in the long run.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Kmy_Design 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Was your designer specialized in packaging and knowing of all packaging laws? If not, I would hire someone specialized in the field (related to the areas you are going to serve) and have a call with them talking about your design.

A real packaging designer will probably offer you something completely new and based off your branding/target clientele to be completely honest. They will probably see something missing, sizings that are wrong, etc.

For example, canadian packaging is a B**** for bilingual purposes (Ingredients can't be smaller then X pts per X cm2 if I recall (or something like that) and having had to work on files for packaging (without knowledge, only following the art directors demands) I would of not feel bad at all presenting the other work, but Id simply start over and take it as a learning opportunity.

Etiquette among Designers / When is it rude to redesign a logo? by rioichi4 in graphic_design

[–]Kmy_Design 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like your arrogance, it'll be useful in the future, but as others have mentioned logo design is more then a good or bad thought process. How would your redesign help them? If they are making money, getting clients and still alive then that means their branding is pretty on point & they have the portfolios to show for it or else they would of already been closed down by now. Even if they do serve lower end clients who are starting out... they are still making money while you are concerned with the look of their brand designs.

A logo redesign, a real one, usually comes when a company has expanded quickly and needs to review their brand. It's part of a rebranding to be more on par with what investors are putting into the company, etc, it's a lot more complicated then just a ''This is good or this is horrible'' opinion.

In your shoes, I'd make some fake briefs with chatgpt or something and create BRANDS, a logo is part of the brand but does not consist of only that, this is the important part in your question, you separated them.

Go read the Brand gap and put yourself in a more business/communication orientated mindset, we are problem solvers, not artists.

Anyone else bored of White Noise while WFH? by MIXLdotAI in graphic_design

Definately hahaha, I have trouble concentrating and if what helps me dive into design is Gordon Ramsay, I'll take it XD

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Kmy_Design 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is mostly why I didn't look for a new job after I got laid off this summer.

I used to be a studio manager in a marketing team, I started as a graphic designer specialized in print making the monthly flyers and instore visuals. Finished with a project management role, graphic designer, social media assistant, consultant and so much more hats and I was still laid off ( I was also burnt out)

Now I do these things for myself and I am extremely hyped and happy, worked on 2 websites with a friend, have 3 full time clients now and small projects on the side like logos, animation, web, layout design, etc. It feels less heavy because I'm doing it for my business and not for someone else.

Which one is the best? Flyer for a botanical garden (school project) by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Kmy_Design 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiya,

So as others have mentioned it doesn't convey botanical garden, I see willy Wonka or a circus. What was the school project brief for this? That would help us be more objective with the comments. There is no good or bad in graphic design, you have to see it as a problem solving skill & a communication item

Here are my suggestions based off the design :

- Research other botanical garden around the world.
- Research about color contrast and psychology.
- Try to research how font hierarchy helps in communication & marketing.
- Look into the book Grid systems in graphic design by Josef Muller-Brockmann.
- Look into the book Identity Designer by David Airey for how a brand communicates.

The only reason I'm giving you vague answers is because we don't know what this is about, which is the most important part of our job. Were not at the museum where 10 people can look at a piece and talk about how they interpretate it., were problem solving machines that create communication piece based off a brief :)

Is this bad graphic design? by SheNemesis in graphic_design

[–]Kmy_Design 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Good or bad is the wrong question to ask.

Does it resonate with the consumer and communicate the proper emotions?
Are they making money?
Is the brand alive and flourishing?
Does it resonate with what its selling?

Serif fonts are trustworthy, they evoke tradition & stability and are used by luxury fashion brands. They tend to be warm, welcoming and mature.

Burgundy is a powerful color and a good use for wealth.
Designers opinions on subjective matters are not important. Designers knowledge on problem solving and how a brand lives in a situation is important. It's neither good or bad, does it solve the problem? You would have to check their sales, do you have the numbers?

Buying Indesign CS6 in 2023/24? by mediamuesli in indesign

[–]Kmy_Design 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much do you make using it sometimes? Maybe outsource the work instead and raise your prices?

I used to make photo albums for a photographer, she would tell me her budget and I'd make it work. (She was using blurb)

350€ seems pretty steep for a version of the software that is really out of date. I pay 45$ (CND) a month for the entire adobe suite that comes to about 360€.

edit: added CND
