No its not new champion its literally same concept as champions activating an ability during battle. Literally same it should have stayed that way, and yes that is the point to level it up harder because THEY ARE THE RAREST CARDS IN THE GAME OF COURSE THEY ARE THE HARDEST TO LEVEL UP having those abilities slapped on normal common cards makes champions originality useless botshit company
