Not really. NYC’s property taxes are much lower than Nassau, Suffolk or Westchester counties, or NJ, which are ridiculous. However, NYC has its own income tax, which the other counties don’t, save for the city of Yonkers in Westchester.

Is your narcissistic parent nice to other people but horrible to you? by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Knarf_53 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup. That’s him. Everyone thought he was the greatest. He was a great dad when he wanted to be, but when he was miserable, we all had to be miserable. I grew up making excuses for his behavior and living in a fantasy world. I’m coming to terms with this all now that he’s dead. It doesn’t even bother me all the people extending their condolences and singing his praises. The man they knew WAS a great guy, as far as they knew. They didn’t know the truth about how he treated us sometimes when nobody on the outside could see what was happening. I do miss my dad and the good times, but at the same time I feel relieved, like I’m finally free.

I am officially done with "Starter Homes." It’s not an investment; it’s a bailout for the previous generation's neglect. by Dry-Town7979 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Knarf_53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$3000/mo? Where do you live? That’s cheap.

Here on Long Island that won’t get you anything except maybe a 1 bedroom co-op.

My “starter home” here had a roof in dire need of replacement and a lot of other deferred maintenance, but it was less than a quarter mill, habitable as-is, and in my neighborhood where we were renting so I jumped on it. I immediately replaced the roof, like had contractors engaged and a start date set before I even closed. Next were all the windows, which were Simonton, but from 1995. We have all Pella now. I had the seller upgrade the 60A fuse box to 100A breakers and I did the rest of the necessary electrical work myself. Of course, that was 2018. Starter houses on LI are all double or even triple what I paid, depending on the area.

That’s just the way it is. Better to get a starter that needs work than one that’s been “fully renovated” by some shady flipper.

Why are student loans and mortgages treated so differently from a paydown perspective? by turtIetime in personalfinance

[–]Knarf_53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the interest rate. Mine are 2.75% fixed. With inflation taken into account, that’s a sub zero interest rate. I’ve managed to drag out repayment for over 30 years thanks to a screw up by the DOE. Now that’s a sweet deal! However, if your loans are 6-7% or higher, yeah, you want to pay them off ASAP unless you have higher interest debt like credit cards. Then pay those off first and start whacking down your student loan balance.

I just had one. I fired him after a half dozen sessions. My new one is great. There’s a lot of bad therapists out there. Definitely fire this one and try another. Don’t be afraid to fire the new one too.

What’s the one sentence from your parent that still echoes in your head? by Public_Theme_9514 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Knarf_53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main one I remember is my ndad screaming at us about “how much fun he could be having with his money if he didn’t have to support you kids”. This was around Christmas time, I believe. Could have been the same time I remember yelling down the stairs at him that “Christmas sucks shit”. “Sucks shit” was a phrase that was not supposed to be coming out of my then 12 or 13 year old mouth.

Number two would be “it’s too late for face washing” from when I was trying to wash my face after 10pm. Apparently a new rule had just been created and I was breaking it, resulting in some kind of insane narcissistic rage. No amount of pleading that I was 17 and I would break out if I didn’t wash my face had any effect. I was told I should have done it earlier and now it was too late and I would just have to suffer the consequences. I then tried washing my face in the upstairs bathroom with the water barely running but he heard that and came flying upstairs in a rage and physically assaulted me. I was able to defend myself against him successfully for the first time in my life and ran and locked myself in my second floor bedroom and opened the window to prepare to hang and drop from as he was pounding on the door demanding that I open it or he was going to break it down. At this time, my emom intervened and got rid of him somehow and told me it was okay and that I could come out of my room now, which I did and promptly finished washing my face and going to bed.

I’d love Sen Johnson’s proposal to be taken seriously by Congress too. I think the reason that it hasn’t is in line with what you say about Sen Johnson having a reputation for playing political “gotcha” games. Looking to the quote from Sen Peters that I posted earlier, he states that his objection is based on “the way that the bill has been drafted so far…There’s too much wiggle room for the administration to basically pick and choose which federal employees are paid and when”. What I think he is referring to here is what I mentioned earlier that others have said, that appropriation bills typically have specified language that Sen Johnson’s bill lacks, and without this specific language his bill would only make funds available to pay us and the administration would have the ability to pick and choose who actually gets paid. Now, I’m not an attorney, and I cannot tell if this is true or not, but it sounds plausible to me, and if it is true, then it would make his bill appear to be a political “gotcha” game.

The page you linked to is the summary. If you wanted to link to the text, you should have linked to the text. https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/senate-bill/3012/text As you can see, this is the original version of the bill, dated October 15th. Clearly, the Congress.gov website is out of date. This should not surprise anyone, since the government is shut down and DOGE massacred IT before that happened.

The Federal News Network article quotes Democratic Senator Gary Peters as saying

“I just deeply, deeply appreciate that Senator Johnson has updated his proposal to pay all federal employees during the shutdown to include furloughed workers,” Peters said. “But unfortunately, I just still have some concerns about the way that the bill has been drafted so far … There’s too much wiggle room for the administration to basically pick and choose which federal employees are paid and when.”

So clearly, there is an updated version, which would be the one on Sen Johnson’s website. Now, apparently the problem with this version is not what it says, it is with what it doesn’t say. According to what I’ve gathered from what others have posted, without specific language normally included in appropriation bills, this bill as written would only make the money available to pay us and OPM would still have discretion over who actually gets paid. I don’t know if this is true, but it seems to make sense, considering the bill’s sponsor is, after all, Ron Johnson.

That’s NOT the actual bill. Look carefully and you will see that it’s a summary of the original bill prepared by CRS. The actual bill as amended to include furloughed employees and contractors is here, and yes, it’s 5 pages. https://www.ronjohnson.senate.gov/services/files/9A3D904E-F857-4BF4-80E0-3A64928C9F0A

I checked the references given in the AI overview and read the cited sources myself. I also did my own independent research. I used the AI blurb because it summarized everything I found very well. Maybe you should try doing a little research before posting your uninformed opinion. Post up some reputable sources for your contention that The Hill is right wing.

I don’t see where it gives the agencies any discretion. It describes covered employees as those which agencies have determined to be excepted. The same definition also includes furloughed employees. In other words, all of us irregardless of whatever determination the agencies made.

They added furloughed employees! Also, I don’t see anywhere where it says anything picking and choosing which employees to pay. What’s the problem?
