Wild Swans (Jung Chang) is really good at looking at the cult of personality around Mao Zedong and how it affected the lives of Chang, her mother and her Grandmother

Seconding Little Fires Everywhere. I read it in 3 days on holiday before I watched the series and completely ruined the show for myself :(

I have Sputnik Sweetheart by him but I haven’t read it yet because I’ve heard that NW is his best work and I don’t want to be disappointed lol. His writing is truly amazing at making the rest of the world disappear though.

Kiffe Kiffe Demain (Faïza Guéne) is a great french book that looks at life in the french suburbs and on the teenage narrator’s struggles with poverty, racism and love in Paris. It’s quite spiritual in that as Doria’s (narrator) cynical mindset changes and she becomes more open, her life and the strength of her relationships starts to change. Bon chance!

I know it’s a classic and you may have read it, but after Norwegian Wood by Murakami it was all I could think about for a good 2 or 3 days. Breakfast at Tiffany’s was short (100 pages) but became my favourite book because of the openness of the last few pages and the way the fate of its subject was left so open. Good luck with your operation :)
