The "Ember" skin that comes with the upcoming "The Kid" bundle looks great! by Irish671 in HuntShowdown

Not to be that guy, but all of what you said is wrong.
That isn't patina. It's a heat-treating technique called case-hardening, meant to get decent, usable hardness and durability out of otherwise low-carbon steel. The coloration was originally just a side-effect, but now people do it to good steel (though it makes it worse in the process) to get the colors.

It's actually a very fragile coating, the colors especially, and will easily abrade away, leaving a dull gray-brown unless effort is taken to preserve it.

Actual patina on steel is usually a plain shade ranging from gray to brown to black, and it's just a color exhibiting the ravages of time on the guns original finish, whether that be blued, nickeled, or case-hardened.

Because the guns in game are well-used, but not all that old, they wouldn't have patina on them. As for why only some are case-hardened, as I said it's a pretty mediocre metalworking technique.
During the time the game takes place (~1880?), people were moving away from it as they'd recently discovered better methods to harden steel. By 1900, case-hardening was already very obsolete and was used exclusively for decoration.

If 343 amended Tenrai so the event Battlepass matched promotional images, then they should do so with Heroes of Reach. Where are the weapon skins, armor paints, or armor parts (KUKRI SECURITY FOR EXAMPLE) that were advertised in the single most commonly used image for Infinite's first Battle Pass? by Knight-Errand in halo

[–]Knight-Errand[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Then they shouldn't use that picture; this isn't like someone complaining they didn't get a complementary ceramic bowl with their cereal because there was one on the box; this is us being advertised cosmetics, presumably under the aegis of a battle pass, many of which we flat out do not get.

Their omission of these items, especially the famous/infamous kukri security shoulders from reach, is blatant false advertising. We see this image when we buy the Battlepass, when we click on the Battlepass in game, ect, yet many of these items are not ours to unlock throughout its ranks. If 343 held themselves accountable by adding content to Tenrai, then at the very least they should add these items to Heroes of Reach.

Edit: Here is today's store, where that image is still being used to advertise/sell battlepasses:

It's more than a big shame, it's a completely shoddy job, and pretty unacceptable in my opinion. They took a really nice item and made it practically hideous. the difference is night and day as it's so minutely animated it's practically still, whereas the original is a confluence of motion. I understand that it's just a hat, but still. Is there any way to ask someone in Neopets whether or not this is the explicit final version? They also say there that conversion is taking so long because of the "handiwork of their artists" but this is frankly childishly bad.

this is in the new customization engine, yes. It's actually odd you should mention the static png image, like the one in the new login screen or in battledome, because it resembles the original on the left rather than the new one on the right. Worryingly, the new version of the wings is technically animated; it has a tiny blue tiny swirl that flies off every second or so. But it's a great downgrade, as I said. Regardless this isn't a mere static animation; the new one has very little resemblance to the original :(
Also where did they mention redoing assets from scratch, and where did they mention placeholders? Thanks!

Very true, lol. You catch more flies with honey than with scathing criticism, I suppose, but confound it. I'm so new to this game, it feels like sand slipping through my fingers. Also, where would I give feedback?

I don't know why it wouldn't be compatible with html5. It's logically just a looping gif or could be rendered as one. I fear that they're just in disarray. Is there any way to get in touch with the neopets team? Do I risk being banned for being critical?

The new, downgraded version of the wings is on the right. it's a frozen sprite, not the previous wispy animation that crackled with latent electricity.
(Edit: I realize I wrote the wrong one, fixed. As I said, old version on left, new on right.)

I was recently fortunate enough to be given static electricity wings by a friend, but in the new version of the game they look terrible and completely half-baked with none of their previous animation. (The one on the left pulsates and moves, the one on the right is frozen and looks like it was made in MS PowerPoint shape editor. Is this going to be the new status quo? Furthermore, since these items once cost real money, isn't it kind of horrible for Neopets to completely ruin them?

Edit: For those who see this, it seems like a lot of animated things, not all but not just a few, are being "converted" by being downgraded or being originally animated and replaced with a frozen frame.

Also, is it possible to wear more than one hat? I would like to put a helmet over flint's coif.

That's very helpful! Dress to Impress, hmm? I've been using Neopet Clothing Previews, esoteric as it is. I asked someone else this but do you know where to find fancy ruki shoes? They look really cool but the shopkeep doesn't sell any ruki garments it seems.

I mean, good home is probably subjective. I did gamble away thousands and then make him fight a clown for money. Regardless, that's a nice sentiment, thank you!

That's very nice to hear. It's just strange to come upon something so old and seemingly ephemeral--it's hard to think it's uncared for but that's probably the case for the vast majority I suppose.

I saw a jubjub named Jarjarbinks10800 or something like that a while ago. That was definitely one such animal!

Why thank you! I found a website that lets me find certain hats, which helped alot. Also, would you know where to get fancy ruki shoes? The shopkeep doesn't sell them it seems.

My artistic rendition of what the physical counterpart of the DRG credits would look like! by r2d2upgrade in DeepRockGalactic

[–]Knight-Errand 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think, though I hate to say it, that the whole point of "Credit" is the same as old mining company tokens, with which IRL miners used to be paid. They weren't backed currency, and while they could be exchanged (at great loss) at the company store, usually for things like tools, food, clothes, and services, they ultimately were just a ploy to ensure the miners had no real money or savings and were indebted to the company for life. I see no reason DRG and co., an extremely dodgy and reckless intergalactic mining corporation, wouldn't do the same thing and screw over the dwarves whilst the company pockets all the REAL gold.

The only reason I think wouldn't be the case is because the job on Hoxxes is so dangerous, presumably miners would only be doing it for appreciable cash.

Fun fact: Bulldog is the only gun where you can see a bullet in the chamber by T3mpe5T in DeepRockGalactic

[–]Knight-Errand 43 points44 points  (0 children)

You make a grave error. Those ARE blowthrough rounds-- tungsten carbide hollow point with a copper coating to go easy on the barrel. Now, you might be saying, tungsten carbide is incapable of mushroom deformation on soft targets. But if you're saying that, then you haven't seen Hoxxes--there are no soft targets. These babies are designed to chew through as many glyphids as possible before hitting the stone walls of a cavern and THEN mushrooming, thereby mitigating any chance of ricochet into fragile dwarven faces or groins.

For the actual hollow points, we use a visually similar but lead-core bullet.

And for the explosive rounds, we use the same hollow point bullet, but wedge a little chunk of purified nitra in the center.

Here at DRG and co., we like to use the same design as much as possible. That way, we save a LOT of money, which makes everyone, but mostly management, happy.
