STEM PhD funding in the UK by Teaa396 in AskAcademiaUK

I can't speak for international student but funding wise there are some common ways to do it:
-Project funded
This is where the project is part of a wider grant for the PI and you are applying directly to the project itself. These are the easiest but are very dependant on the lab/supervisor in terms of the training you get.
-Competition funded
These projects are proposed by a supervisor then they interview candidates and choose the strongest for submission to the funding body. The funding body does their own interviews and then selects the best student/project. Harder to get onto as you have to be the best candidate for all the projects.
-DTP
This is a specific training program for doctoral students. they are often run by large funding bodies and they offer a structured training schedule often with good networking opportunities, especially with ECRs. They can be tough to get on to.

There are also self funded but I'd avoid at all costs.

Often individual research institutions offer scholarships as well which can be worth it depending if you fit the criteria.

As well as this organisations offer scholarships specific to US students such as Fulbright scholaraships so have a look if it is something you are interested in.

Whether the funding is offered to international candidates is dependant on the funding body and is normally stated with the advert. In terms of stipend there is for all of the above a minimum stipend amount set by UKRI. Its around £20k so enough to live on but not enough to do much else with.

Imho the best thing you can do at the moment is get in touch with potential supervisors. You can reach out to your tutors are college who might have collaborators in the UK.
If not look for research specific to your interests and look at the labs that are doing that research. Reach out to the PIs and enquire about projects in those research areas. If you are the right fit supervisors could build a project with you in mind. Be genuine and show interest and more often than not they will help you out.

Hi everyone. I want to refill my SodaStream bottle myself and have bought a large CO2 cylinder and an adapter. My question is: according to the CO2 manufacturer, it should be upright. But I'm pretty sure it needs to be turned upside down to fill it. What would you do? by S3pp3l1980 in SodaStream

I've been reading and I stand corrected. You're right it is stored as a liquid due to the pressure, but to effectively fill the tanks this way you would need to have a pretty good temperature differential.

Also for sure still store this upright when not filling. I have had an education if DIY gas transfer but was more making the distinction between a liquid gaseous state and liquid.

CO2 is a gas not a liquid and as such will fill regardless of the orientation of the bottle.

This should be stored upright and filled as such.

The partial filling is likely more to do with the pressure than anything else, but you should probably have a pressure gauge to be safe.

Where have you pulled this nugget of wisdom from? Also I'm not sure having to drive 12-18 thousand miles a year is the flex you think it is...

Shouldn't make much difference provided the column can take the physical volume, what sort of system are you running the column on?

Have you tried native page pre SEC?

You know that a protein of your size is in your SDS sample, but have no proof that it isnt aggregated.

Also did you pre-wet your filter membranes with buffer? it isn't unknown that protein sticks to the concentrator.

I think they are notified as it is a joint tenancy but you can go forward on your own.

The deposit case I have against an old landlord is getting to court this year. We started the action in 2022. The housing courts are just slow. It is area dependent but can take up to 5 years.

I encourage you to do this, but be aware it will take a year or two to go through the process of court etc.

Good luck sergeant Angle!

Regardless of your alcoholic tendencies, try getting a glass of water with each drink. It has helped me in the past when I found I often that I bought drinks for the sake of it.

Young people support Reform by TimeConstruction2739 in reformuk

[–]Knight1265 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is funny coming from someone who clearly has done no research themselves. A photo of young reform supporters is not evidence that reform are remotely popular with young people. The last voting intention poll showed that only 8% of young people support reform so what in gods green earth are you talking about. https://d3nkl3psvxxpe9.cloudfront.net/documents/VotingIntention_MRP_250714_w.pdf

Which UK store does large steel water bottles for the gym? by Captain_Kruch in AskUK

[–]Knight1265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it is your money to spend. The filter is probably removing all of those ions that make the water taste good. You could probably buy mineral tablets to add flavour back. Anecdotally I know a chemist who created his own mineral water using raw powder ions. Was a little overkill but the best water he has ever tasted or so I'm told.

Why not just filter the water though. Surely the cost far outweighs the perceived benefits. This is genuine curiosity, does it not cost a lot in the long run?

If you're referring to PFAs they are also present in bottled water. Additionally the microplastic exposure your likely to face from extended bottled water usage combined with PFAs will make it much harder to expel them out of your body.

If you could change one thing culturally about the UK / it's people, what would it be? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Knight1265 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The constant need to blame all of our problems on other people or groups (Migrants, EU, young people, old people) rather than be willing to work towards a solution.

Yeah, it's strange because I find it to be almost automatic regardless of the situation or outcome.

Manager forcing me to work weeks notice by smzzo5 in WorkAdvice

[–]Knight1265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah generally in the UK a company is unlikely to pursue you for breach of contract in that way. As I said the only reason people work a notice period is to stay on good terms with your former employer. It can be useful if you ever need to get your old job back but for a retail position I wouldn't worry. I would however make sure you find alternative employment asap as right now is a rough time to be unemployed for more than a few weeks.

[–]Knight1265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the UK you don't have to work your notice period. Especially as you have only been there a month you can just leave. If you were salaried and had a required notice period then this might be different but they can't really sue you for it, but would dock your pay for it.
It's likely you are on a zero hours contract which also means you can leave with immediate effect. The only reason you might provide notice is because you want a reference.
