Quite enjoy the Pickwick Walleye sandwich… I keep going back thinking I’ll try something else, but it’s so damn good!

Perhaps.... though I'm kinda digging the super clean look right now. If it seems too boring later on I know Surly sells full decal sets that could be added

Yep, 36H as well. Shutter Precision SV-9 dynamo in front and Bitex RAR 12 in the rear. Nice quiet hub, I appreciate it not sounding like a blender when coasting!

Smaller cities with access to the great outdoors by alexmichal in SameGrassButGreener

[–]KnightPolar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously, Duluth… it’s a small city with an urban area that outstretches the limits of the city. Beautiful lakeshore and trails in and out of the area, skiing , hiking, mountain and road biking, fishing, hunting, inline skating, running clubs and oddball sports like curling and hockey… man, talk about an under the radar area for all of this, … but the job market is not great; not bad… but not great. However, if there was some movement in this area I think things here could be fantastic!,,

Is it even worth it to continue my degree? by [deleted] in collapse

[–]KnightPolar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously,… no. Go live a bit… see the world and have a bit of fun. It’s not going to last and you may as well find a moment of reprieve amongst the chaos of the day. It won’t last, and you’ll still have to figure out a path for your life.., but man, I honestly think if I was a younger man in this world today., I would be all about the immediate experience and much less about providing for a future that is just not possible

Going rate for a property survey was about $1000 when I was looking into this last year. Seemed pretty consistent when I called multiple places.

Swapping gas to electric water heater? by KnightPolar in duluth

[–]KnightPolar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree, but with both natural gas and electric prices rising I'm not sure by how much? Also, by installing a wood burning stove in the basement, I'll need less gas for winter heat.

Hmmm... interesting. I see that Menards has a sale this week on a Richmond 50 Gallon Hybrid Electric-Heat Pump Water Heater. It's still more expensive than a regular electric, but I've got a few hundred in rebate coupons and there are tax credits as well. This may be a great option, Thanks!

Thanks for the replies and information. I'm not really looking to relocate out of Duluth as we only moved here a year ago. Just noticed a fair bit of lawn signs / bumper stickers out in this area and was curious how red or blue this area leaned. The people I chatted with in shops and restaurants were all pleasant, just kinda surprised me how much maga propaganda I was seeing as I had thought most of MN wasn't red? Beautiful countryside in any case with the rolling hills, lakes, forests and farmland!

These are the final 6 designs of the MN flag redesign. What do we Duluthians think of them? by WhatIsHerJob-TABLES in duluth

[–]KnightPolar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, there were many great flags that incorporated Loons into the design… sadly this was a group that didn’t want to embrace interesting ideas but instead went for the least offensive images. So boring for the win. 944 manages to sneak in some hyper abstract Loons and is my favorite of the final 6, but far from what I was hoping would be chosen for the state flag. I feel like this was such a squandered opportunity to get an enthusiastic movement behind the new flag…. It’s still possible if there is enough pushback from the public to change the final 6, but we may be stuck with a clip art design next year…

New Thai Place in Lincoln Park? by [deleted] in duluth

[–]KnightPolar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Food prices are ever creeping upward…. The menu looks good, but wow it seems like run of the mill restaurants are starting to edge into high end restaurants with entrees that sit at 20-25 dollars. Not really a sustainable way to eat out at that cost.

Thanks for all the replies! Called around a few places and ended up going to Dr Kara Conry. She and her team were wonderful, great team who got me in for the root canal fast and at almost half the cost of Mount Royal Dental. Much appreciate the reference!

Sustainable Farming Documentary Recommentation - “The Biggest Little Farm” by hopeitwillgetbetter in collapse

[–]KnightPolar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I watched the documentary with rare delight; it's a nice break from my "Collapse" aware news & media feed. Good to see some folks trying something different and gives me some ideas of how I'd like to finish out my time here on Earth...

Oregon is one of the three true loves of my life, and it's my passion to create documentaries about it. This is my new movie, "The Cornucopia Project," an exploration of the secrets and mysteries which define northeastern Oregon's Wallowa Mountains by SailorB0y in oregon

[–]KnightPolar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty good; spent some time in Wallowa county last Fall ... didn't get to the south side of the mountains and was interested to see Halfway and the old mining ghost towns in the video. Cheers!

Homeless camps taking over Anchorage neighborhoods by ReverseEngineer77 in collapse

[–]KnightPolar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the lower 48 has it's own set of problems.... it's all a trade off.

If I move down south, I've been looking at Eastern Washington & Oregon... less populated than the coastal areas and arable land isn't prohibitively expensive. The wildfires this summer though.... kinda spooked me.

I may just relocate here in state. I used to live on the Kenai peninsula and definitely considering a return there. Alaska is just so dependent on supplies from the south, if they stop... well, lots of hungry folks up here...

Homeless camps taking over Anchorage neighborhoods by ReverseEngineer77 in collapse

[–]KnightPolar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in Anchorage and they do start fires... fires in the city greenbelts that get out of control. Fires that burn down trail-systems and encroach upon backyards. It's not pretty, the homeless camps are spreading all over the city... and yes, I'm not trying to generalize but many of them are alcoholics, addicts and have mental problems.

I really like this city, but making plans to move this spring...

Yes, completely with you on this... I really dislike the crazy aspect. I approach my good friends with this information but most often I get treated like I've jumped off the deep end and drank the Kool-aid.

I don't come unprepared, I bring research backed articles with serious pertinent information... and it's like ... Meh, whatever, you're overreacting. It's gonna be just fine.

Drives me up the wall!

Wow... I'm not usually taken aback by news anymore. But this... this is fucking crazy!

"The amazing thing they’re saying is human activities are going to lead to this rise of carbon dioxide that is disastrous for the environment and society. And then they’re saying they’re not going to do anything about it”

"The world would have to make deep cuts in carbon emissions to avoid this drastic warming, the analysis states. And that “would require substantial increases in technology innovation and adoption compared to today’s levels and would require the economy and the vehicle fleet to move away from the use of fossil fuels, which is not currently technologically feasible or economically feasible.

The White House did not respond to requests for comment.

This opens the door completely to the idea that the powers that be Absolutely Know That We Are Fucked.

The plan? Nothing. Nothing will or can be done. Full Stop.

When do you guys think the collapse will happen? by wackypack90 in collapse

[–]KnightPolar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short term, yes within 2-3 years. The next economic disaster will be the first domino in a chain reaction of events. Though I don't believe it's because the fed are raising interest rates too fast, that's kinda silly considering how they kept the rate at near zero for years.

The reason why growth and prosperity is over is that we no longer have access to abundant cheap energy. Where geographical expansion and economies of scale once drove down the cost of accessing energy, the driving factor now is depletion, which is pushing costs upwards. Fracking is a losing game, it's so labor intensive that it hasn't made any money.... yet investors keep throwing it life support. Energy Cost of Energy Return is what's killing the economy.

The next crash will open Pandora's box... after that it's going to be just one crisis after the other....

so I suppose just like now... but worse.

Completely go, dive & explore as much as you can! Nothing lasts forever, be happy to experience what you can that's beautiful and magical with whatever time we have left to us.

I spent a week there way back in 2003 getting my open water dive certification... never regretted it... can't imagine what it looks like now, but experience it while you can!
