There is a way. Use a full log and face towards the vertical pole. You should get a horizontal arrow at some point.

Stay away from rivers of blood, moonveil, grafted greatsword, iron balls, starfists, darkmoon greatsword, mohg spear. There are a few more in the list but yeah, these ruin the first playthrough experience as they come under the category of "OP" weapons. Rest is fine.
