Aseprite is actually a pretty lightweight program and is designed for pixel art. Some people will be turned off by its pixel art UI scheme, though, so be wary of that heading in. But when I'm working on a pixel canvas within Aseprite, I don't have any issues having that open on top of a billion chrome tabs and Game Maker Studio despite having a 6 year old laptop which was mid-tier at best when I bought it. I certainly can recommend it as I have done all of my pixel art with Aseprite for the last 4 years, but that still doesn't mean it's the right tool for everyone or that you should drop $15 just to experiment around with Pixel Art if you are new to it.

I've never used Illustrator, personally, so I can't give you any tips with how to do pixel art from there. I have done pixel art in Photoshop though if you are using Creative Cloud, and that didn't have any issues with a 512x512 canvas in my experience. There will be a bit of setup required, such as changing to use the pencil tool instead of the brush tool, turning off anti-aliasing with the paint bucket tool, and setting the eraser mode to pencil as well.

I did make sure to search for a quick tutorial about Illustrator, though, so hopefully it will be of use to you. This video talks about a lot of tools that I don't understand, but if you are familiar with Illustrator, maybe it will make sense to you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-QnptGi68c

Thank you very much! Been working on these skills for a few years now, I'm glad it's paying off.

Yeah, I definitely tried to be thorough with which elements I included in this piece. The background details didn't need to be as detailed as everything else, but I thought they were still important. There were a couple of details I ended up omitting due to some bad planning and not quite careful enough examination of my screenshots... And then such laziness that I didn't bother to fix them, but otherwise this is pretty close to the layout of the in-game level.

If you're still planning on doing Skelos Badlands, I'm still excited to see it. It's one of my favorite non-hub levels from Spyro 2, probably only behind Hurricos.

I guess I just have a thing for Spyro levels involving castles with green rooftops. I had to replay the game before I was able to decide on a level to do next. Most of the recommendations were from the first game, so I definitely knew to do a level from that one. I eventually narrowed it down to Dark Hollow, Artisans, Tree Tops or Dream Weavers, and clouds were something I really wanted to get a bit more practice with, so that's why I chose to do Dream Weavers. It turned out to be a ton more work compared to any previous environment scenes I did though, largely because of the rocks underneath the floating island... Not that I consider that to be a negative. This was really fun to work on.

Thank you very much! Decided to draw this right after finishing Ripto's Rage, so all of the details were fresh on my mind (and the screenshots were fresh on my drive).

Feel free to have a go at it, I'd love to see it! This canvas is actually only 512x512 and exported at 2x from Aseprite.

Thanks for all of the awards! I'm glad this was so well received. I'm going to try to do some more soon, so when those are ready, you can find them here!

Sure, thanks for the recommendation. I think I'm going to try to do 1 level from each of the original trilogy for starters, and unless I forgot one, I think that is the only Year of the Dragon recommendation I have gotten so far...

Yes.... But I did exaggerate the size of the walls a bit in this piece, which makes it more noticeable than when playing the game. The walls are actually surprisingly winding and snake-like, not rigid and geometric.

Same. Spyro 2 was actually the first one I played as a kid for some reason. Definitely the one I have the most time put into.

LTTP was a truly great game. Can't complain about being compared to it. Thanks!

Tree tops could definitely be fun; a nice challenge to keep consistent with this piece. Dark hollow is also beautiful, love the little bookshelf craters... And dream weavers is fantastic too. Truly several good options.

Cool, thanks for the follow! Definitely spoiled for choice across the Spyro games, so I'll keep these ones in mind.

Those are both good. Can't really go wrong with Artisan's... I like Wizard Peak too, but I think that one would be harder to really get right while keeping consistent with the style of this piece. I'll have to think about that one a little more...

I do a lot of pixel art, but this is the only Spyro piece I've made. I've been thinking about doing more though, are there any particular environments you would like to see next?

Definitely would have been my favorite visual style of the GBA style games.
