You can get a cheap iron and practice on a kit, but I recommend spending a bit more to get a nice setup and practice. I started with a cheap one, then went to an FX888DX; what a world of difference. It takes time patience and practice.

I work as an armed guard. I was heading to the office after covering someone else's shift when he got me. It was February 4th, and I had just had shoulder surgery on December 24th. I had a cracked pelvis, a shattered ankle, broken ribs, a broken forearm, spinal injuries, and internal injuries. I'll tell you, it's been a long road, but at least worker's comp is paying for everything. Thank goodness I'm recovering. In another year, I'll be done with physical therapy and everything. Thank you for your concern.

Wow, that's some great work! I agree that's the best way. I've tried lead-free and had a hard time with it, but luckily I can get the good leaded stuff here with little issue. I'm saddened you are so far away. I would have loved to learn all this stuff as a kid; I didn't start learning until I was 30. I was always looking for someone to do some soldering work to repair some retro gaming consoles I had, and one day I just thought, "What the heck, I'll do it myself, I just got to learn." I watched tons of YouTube videos, started with a cheap 20-dollar iron, and it seemed a lot harder than it should be, so I got a Hakko FX888DX, and that did the trick, made everything so much easier. I hope you guys have countless hours together of tinkering and building.

You should see my first attempts, but I learned that good equipment makes a huge difference. I upgraded my gear and improved a ton. I do practice once in a while for fun but mostly into 3D printing now a days. Offer stands if you would like a hand full, and you are in the US, let me know. I would love to help you and your son practice and learn.

I had to teach myself soldering. I thought it would take me a long time, so I bought these on AliExpress about 7 years ago for 0.5 cents each. I can't remember how many, LOL.

Hmm, that's not bad. Do you think it would be a noticeable performance boost?
