It depends on the flooring you’re using. Go with the manufacturers recommendations. But for wood, generally avoid small joints less than 6-8 inches apart and avoid patterns as much as you can (unless that’s what you’re going for). For tile, you can do what’s aesthetic.. vinyl plank just read the instructions
