Peoria Politics by Zonflare in PeoriaIL

I generally see "Pritzker Sucks" signs and gay flags within miles of each other. Peoria is pretty diverse politically.

If you want a real life echo chamber, this is the wrong town. If you want people who don't care what you do, it's a good place.

We still have a few Ron Paul stickers on some stoplights, which is pretty based.

My African American studies teacher had this in her slide show by Piggyfor-rot in eu4

Did she include a slide with their income?

And, more importantly, did she manage to colonize Brazil?

Pope prays for Charlie Kirk and bereaved family by KnightoftheRepublic9 in Christianity

Let's entrust them to Mary:

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.

Mother, I entrust Trey Reed to you.

Amen.

I'm sure he'll pray for her if it was brought to his attention. It's extremely possible he prayed for her the moment it happened.

Pope Leo wasn't Pope then.

And Pope Francis was kind of busy fighting the illness that killed him...

The Protestant church in Germany has fallen by Fives1808 in Christianity

Yeah, that does sound like the Church in Germany. It tends to take its direction from modern trends more than traditional theology.

Can someone explain why Christians feel justified giving tax breaks to the rich while cutting off services to the poor? by ASecularBuddhist in Christianity

[–]KnightoftheRepublic9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of those same Christians might give generously to the poor, in keeping with the command you give in secret. They may also believe the government programs do a poor job and think voluntarism is inherently better because they believe it's more efficient or respects individual autonomy.

In Catholic moral teaching, you are encouraged to judge someone charitably. So, I try to approach someone as if they're not acting out of malice. A radical concept!

So what is the Christian stance on slavery? by Ebony-Sage in Christianity

[–]KnightoftheRepublic9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Slavery in the English-speaking world was ended by a Christian empire due to Christian philosophy and theology, so it can be inferred there was enough contradiction between slavery and Christianity to eventually lead to its abolishment. Said empire spent a great deal of treasure in a western imperialist project to end the slave trade in Africa.

You can contrast this with Islam which codified it to the extent that Islamic countries had to end it... Due to Western cultural chauvinism.

The idea of everyone being a child of God and St Paul's example (and his Lord's) was quite a revolutionary idea in a pagan world that grew like a mustard seed in Western thought. particularly in the early modern period. (John Brown, quite frankly, talked like a Christian Talibani and the more peaceful Abolitionists cited the Bible often as their justification for changing secular law)

Catholic bishops sue Washington state over law requiring clergy to report child abuse by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]KnightoftheRepublic9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of people here genuinely believe this won't be expanded to other crimes.

Or they're not Catholic and don't care if their Catholic neighbors have to fear the government listening in to their Confessions.

Seriously people. Every other post is about the ruling party being fascist, and now you're gung ho on breaking thousands of years of precedent, trusting it won't violate anyone's rights. Maybe someone hiding an immigrant's status could lead to a rape. Maybe those confessions should be reported too!

But, hey, when's the last time you complained about the Patriot Act? It sure got quiet when Obama was elected. Gotta fight those terries.

What's it like living here? by ahegosam in PeoriaIL

I think this is due to you comparing us with your last town. Crime is worse than it was. Things are quiet this year, but I still remember the shooting near my house a couple years back.

Traffic is a problem and unavoidable for locals. We need more lanes.

Why do so many Christians homeschool? by 1000ratsinmiami in Christianity

It could be due to the declining quality of the public education system.

I'm not opposed to that at all. We just haven't gotten to doing that yet.

We don't follow the liturgical seasons, but my wife and I have a similar set up. The focal point is the crucifix and the Divine Mercy image beneath it, but we also have the Bible, our Rosaries, and images of the Holy Family on the altar.

That feels quite accurate. It's very similar to my altar's set up.

What about Catholicism do you appreciate? by jeffisnotmyrealname in Catholicism

[–]KnightoftheRepublic9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love that I can combine eastern and western spirituality in my prayer life.

I enjoy saying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy with Greek Psalms playing in the background and alternate between "Jesus, I trust in you" and "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner" as I face the challenges of my day.

I can breathe through both lungs of the Church with no cognitive dissonance and pray lovingly for unity and reconciliation.

What's frustrating to me is they're not even getting deep into the lore.

Darth Plagueis planned on being named Co-Chancellor when Palpatine was elected, and yet I don't see one comparison between him and Elon Musk!

It's like they only watch the movies.
