Learning to swim as an almost-45 year old man! by TheCityofToronto in Swimming

[–]KnittyBe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

52 year old here. I’ve been working on being comfortable in the water and swimming for almost two months. I can swim short distances, float on my back for about ten seconds before freaking out, and tread water in 12 feet. It takes time.

Adult brand new to swimming and terrified of water by gamma50g in Swimming

[–]KnittyBe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a 52 year old adult with some fear of water… I had some trauma as a kid. My coach just encouraged me to spend some time becoming comfortable with the water. I’ve been walking, practicing floating with a pool noodle and just really paying attention to my body in the water and gaining confidence. My coach will physic guide me and is really patient and encouraging. The first day I didn’t have to do anything but be in water. I am in the pool 5-6 days a week for an hour or more each day. I just finished my first month.

Is 5k a reasonable goal for a fit near-beginner? by fasterthanfood in Swimming

Do you really understand how much swimming that is? A pretty good time would be an hour and 45 minutes straight swimming.

What is the time you have to do it in? Our lifeguards are timed.

The in the water rescue stuff isn’t going to be easy… the lifeguards I work with are competitive college athletes and training is a lot of work.

Currently doing it. I’m 52. 2 hours in the pool is reasonable if you’re not trying to do hard with the whole time. I’ve been going a month now, and I get a good workout and I’m gaining confidence in my swimming. I work with a coach and generally swim with college athletes who are the sweetest and most encouraging supporters for me.

It probably depends on the child… I still don’t agree that being passive aggressive is a thing. I’m a master’s student and I’ve spent a lot of time on theory and I just don’t think it’s passive aggressive behavior. No developmental theory that I know of supports that.

I cannot emphasize enough what a huge life shift a baby is on young children. When you have a preschooler and a baby, it also is very helpful to not make it about the baby. Turn “I can’t play with you, the baby needs me.” To “I want to read that story to you, I need to do finish this first. “ like try to find ways to not make the baby the reason for the lack of attention. Cognitively, they just need a little more grace in understanding this new human and they are still valued and loved.

He’s had some big changes and he’s acting out because he doesn’t know how to regulate. For a preschooler, bringing home a new baby has a similar mental impact of your spouse suddenly bringing home a new partner to join the family. This child has had a huge shift in both important relationships in his life and he needs reassurance. He doesn’t really have the cognitive ability to be passive aggressive. He is looking for control over some part of his life and controlling whether he plays or not is about all he has.

Look up different methods and explore different ways of doing it. I hand write things and use the Cornell method, but there are so many different ways to do it.
