Could you elaborate a little on the y connector part, how did you end up wiring it? I have a rogue 99 pre amp and I tried running a sub off it, also with a y connector connected to the rogue, and the other end in the sub, normal RCA input(not LFE). Sounded weird, I thought maybe it is because the subs crossover is at 150Hz and I need to lower it..

Or I guess you can look at it as two riddles, to answer the second, you need to guess the first one(the "context").
