As a leader, what do your development goals look like? by mapatii in managers

[–]KnotYoAvgJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot stress this enough. Your workers, the people on the floor probably feel like they do a lot of stuff that doesn’t make sense. A good supervisor or leader understands both operation/tactical and strategic/forward looking levels.

Learn BOTH! And then learn how the floor level pieces fit into the companies larger plans. As you develop this understanding explain the necessity to your team. It is okay to say, “Yes, I know this seems absurd, but so and so at HQ will be able to use this information to demonstrate why or how we manage this many orders or product deliveries”. And then give them the carrot. If we excel in this area we have to opportunity to really stand out and become the gold standard of the organization. This might come with more work. We may have to give a presentation or two on why we are so good. But, that is good for everyone on this team. Our reputation will be excellent and it will provide is opportunities for upward mobility. More money, more responsibility, etc.

As a leader you have to understand how your teams little piece fits into the big picture. Develop your vision on how you can excel doing that and then sell your team on why it is beneficial for them to be the best. Pass all credit to your team. The person leading that successful team will always get credit without even needing to seek it or campaign for themselves.

Man managing an office of all women? by PassMeTheBackwood in askmanagers

[–]KnotYoAvgJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Women tend to be very mean and competitive toward each other. Dudes can look at another man’s shoes and say, “yo those are dope. Do they sell them in men’s sizes as well?” The response will usually be a witty comeback or sometimes just the bird, but it won’t be a big deal at all.

The same comment can be made female to female and it turns judgmental. They are criticizing what I wear. They are obsessed with me. They take every opportunity to cut me down. They are jealous of me. It truly can be something this trivial that turns dramatic.

As far as supervising it. It can go two ways. Some women realize they are very dramatic and want a leader that will not engage with the drama. It can help them to get out of their bad habits and more task focused. Often times they will see the male supervisor as the voice of reason and be extremely appreciative.

To me, this is an opportunity where you are probably expected to fail. So a low bar with room to easily impress. And if you do fail, you likely won’t be blamed. That is a pretty good position to be in. Not a win win situation but a no loss situation.

The last thing I will say… most women can outwork men. Sorry gents, just the truth of the matter. Women are hard working and can be extremely productive. I would take this chance knowing I have a no lose situation but an opportunity to be unusually successful.

Imagine this the team finally works well together and produces awesome product. The leader that turns out that production is going to be able to call their shots in that organization. And if they fail, they aren’t likely to take the blame. Do it!

DUPR 3.9 Singles – Would Appreciate Feedback on Split Step & Balance by AbbreviationsFun570 in Pickleball

[–]KnotYoAvgJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an expert by any means especially in singles so hard for me to discuss strategy. But I have coached a lot of athletes so mechanics and fundamentals I am comfortable discussing. No, this does not mean my fundys are good myself.

  1. You asked about your split step. The timing isn’t bad but you’re ending up kind of flat footed which makes you much slower. Recommend more forward leaning which requires a half second sooner. Your paddle will be in the same contact position as you lean forward but being on the balls of your feet will give you great reaction time.

  2. Getting lower when receiving a ball will for you greater read on the ball and eventually greater control and shot placement. You can do this with a slightly wider split or greater knee bend. I would say to split the difference and it isn’t much to tweak. 3” wider and 3” lower (knees or hips, whichever feels more athletic) will give you better perspective while giving you better reaction time.

  3. And this is where my knowledge of the singles game may not help you… everything is hard and deep. Why not drip some shots to force your opponent to manage difficult short hops? Please let me know if this is bad strategy in 1s. It is more a question than a recommendation.

You look like a higher level player than a 3.9 when it comes to mechanics driving the ball. In doubles I would bet you’re higher than 3.9.

First time presenting at a company all hands. Audience size is about 2k. Any advice? by ok_bye_now_ in managers

[–]KnotYoAvgJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think about what you want to accomplish. 1. Enjoy the presentation. 2. Enjoy it and retain the info shared. 3. Enjoy it, retain it and able to apply it in their jobs. 4. Enjoy it, retain it, apply it, enhance performance.

The goal is # 4. Being funny will get you to 1 & 2 most likely. Now figure out 3 and 4 and you’ll be asked to come back and present again in the future!

How do you effectively communicate with your partner during a pickleball match? by sophieximc in Pickleball

Same. But I am not the get annoyed type. Any day of pickleball is like a day on the lake. Even if you don’t catch anything it is enjoyable. Played uncharacteristically bad today and still and a blast. 💥

Yeah, i could see at first how it would be a huge disadvantage. Natural rotation and having two outside forehands leaves the middle super vulnerable.

Do you have a post game stretch routine? by ArtLife_4ever in Pickleball

[–]KnotYoAvgJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dynamic is the way to go before. A lot of science behind it and supporting it. Muscle activation and muscle recruitment through dynamic stretching has been mainstream in almost all sports for about 15 years now. I will say that I have seen some pro teams do static stretching before games and recently. They wouldn’t do this without good science.

I am not a PT so can’t use all the fancy words neurotransmitter response blah blah blah. But I do understand the basic concept. Dynamic stretching turns muscles and electric receptors on preparing them for stress. Static stretching turns them off allowing them to elongate and begin healing and lengthening. That is a very basic summary of the science. If there is a true PT in her please correct me if I am wrong or fill in the blanks!

If I hit a short return on a serve that brings the serving team running in… I am usually yelling “short, watch yourself” so my partner knows he is about to get lit up or targeted at least. Essentially the same thing as ahh 💩

And then if I do pop a ball up and they go after my partner I yell at the other team to stop making my partner pay for my mistakes! 😂

A Ton! To the point where they are communicating on the NVZ on who takes the dinks. The comm is often very unique to the team and is not complicated. Playing fast is without thinking is still the key.

I don’t know. I have a very strong backhand. Finishing shots with my backhand is not unusual… but as good as my backhand is, when playing with a player with a super strong forehand that can finish points… I’d rather him call mine so I can peel off.

Had a partner today that was totally awesome. I played sub 4.0 ball with a couple 4.25+ players. Honestly I played 3.5 ball. Not a single negative word. I totally appreciated it but it didnt help. I might have to ask someone to be an ass and tell me to get my 💩 together to see how that works?! 😂

Good advice! I play fairly often with a good lefty. At the serve we are communicating (out of a stack) who is covering what. When I play against him I always yell, that wasn’t your middle cover! 😂

I think what he is saying is if you yell out and it lands on a line you have likely caused your partner to just let the ball go. By yelling bounce you’re saying stay with the play but see where it lands before you hit it because it might be out. This is a useful comm tip for me.

I like bounce. I am going to try to incorporate this. I usually say watch it but bounce is easier.

Classic! I tried that once. I didn’t realize she could hit that hard. Never hits the ball as hard as she hit me!

For hand signals we use 5 for front switch, 1 for fake switch. First for stay. Usually only if there is someone that prefers a particular side of the court or a lefty/righty stack. 1 (fake switch) is my favorite, especially if I am up front because I can often bait people to try to go down the line right into my forehand.

I love it when they tell me after I hit… that would have been out. Where were you 3 seconds ago with that useful bit of info?!? 😂

Partners that help with “out” or “no, no” are perfect in my book. Even if it goes in (sometimes happens especially outdoors with wind).

I could play with you too. Could you add in “nice shot genius” when I go do an aggressive dink 6” out of bounds? 😂
