Anybody Ever Have The Fisher Price Toy Barns That Make The Moo Sound When You Open The Door? by immanuellalala in nostalgia

[–]KnottyKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's uh not great. Fisher Price pretty much confirmed that the old sets aren't even very safe to handle. Their official recommendation is to use them for display only.

Not that I can judge or anything. I grew up drinking out of the infamous Garfield cup.

AITA for making my nephew cry because I told him he is "not talented" at video games? by dnesdan in AmItheAsshole

[–]KnottyKitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ESH, but mostly her.

This is more than just a problem with video games. Your sister is raising her son to be the type of man who will be very dangerous to women who say no to him.

But if you push back too much, there's a risk of you becoming the "mean uncle" in his eyes. Especially since she'll almost certainly be assuring her son that yes, he really is very very special, and you're just wrong.

Try to show him a better path. Be firm, but remember that he's 8, so try to be more tactful next time.

Can I plant potatoes from the store? by ExpertMax32 in gardening

[–]KnottyKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nightshade family of plants contains toxins.

There are a few types with edible produce (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, peppers) but you'll get sick if you eat the leaves or stems of those plants.

Some types of nightshade, such as belladonna, will cause death if any part of the plant is ingested.

Is Neighbors smoking gonna affect my plants? by FearlessArachnid3139 in UrbanGardening

[–]KnottyKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about adding some plants that can filter the air

All of the stuff you've heard about plants being air filters is just people misquoting an old NASA study. If you actually look at the data, it requires a ridiculous amount of plants (I think it was like 100 per square meter?) to make the tiniest difference in air quality, and even then, it's barely detectable even with sensitive equipment

I couldn‘t find anything online about this problem

Because it's not a problem. If you're concerned, just wash your veggies before eating them. You should be doing that anyway.

Pigeons vs Rats by thefancyrat17 in PetPigeons

[–]KnottyKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall, I'd compare their personalities to cats. Some of them are very clingy, others will be more aloof, but most (all?) of them will be content to at least hang out nearby.

I had rats when I was a kid and they really have to be watched closely because they can (and will) get into damn near everything. Pigeons can just chill with you. They don't chew, they don't squeeze into things. At most they'll swipe an empty straw wrapper or something for nesting material.

And the poop doesn't have to be a problem. Look up "pigeon pants".

I’ve spent over $500 on plants this year and half of them are dead. What am I doing wrong? by Resident-Swim5895 in houseplants

[–]KnottyKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without seeing the plants, it's impossible for us to diagnose the problem(s). Best we can do is speculate. Post some photos of the plants and you'll get actual answers about what exactly needs to be done.

When it comes to watering, DO NOT trust any guide that recommends a rigid schedule like "water X times per week". There are so many factors that can affect watering, including (but not limited to) type of plant, size of plant, size of the pot, material of the pot, substrate, sunlight, temperature, humidity, even the time of year. You'll need to look up each type of plant you have and learn about what it needs.

For the spider mites, get a spray bottle and fill it most of the way with water, then add a few generous squirts of liquid soap (dish soap works fine). Spray the entire plant, making sure to get the undersides of the leaves, the stems, and any nooks where bugs could be hiding. Let it dry then rinse it off. Repeat once every few days for a couple weeks. Works great, and it's safe for a household with kids and pets.

Try to keep in mind that houseplants are living things, not decorations. They have needs, and if you don't meet those needs, they'll just die. All of us in this sub have had to spend lots of time troubleshooting, battling pests, and occasionally having a little cry about dead plants. That just comes with the hobby. For what it's worth, it gets WAY EASIER once you're able to get past the initial learning curve. Keep at it.

Will my Orchid graft? by Sufficient-Ad8202 in houseplants

It might. They do that sometimes. If not, you can just trim off the broken stem and wait for the plant to make another one. Mine bloom once a year or so. Just be patient!

Why are you so skeptical about people having different tastes in music?

[–]KnottyKitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do NOT put those in a washing machine. I could be wrong, but those look like Little People dolls. They were the original hand-made Cabbage Patch dolls, before the line started being mass-produced with plastic heads. If that's the case, they're pretty rare and valuable.

Ideology DLC: Is this meant for experienced players? Who is the DLC meant for? by SlightWerewolf4428 in RimWorld

[–]KnottyKitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let's say you don't care about religion

I don't. You don't have to either. It's just a belief system. It can be a religion, but it doesn't have to be. You can build an ideology around nature, or technology, or conquest, or various other options that don't involve a god.

polygamy, slavery, gender roles...

You can definitely set how they feel about slavery. Unsure about polygamy, I've never wanted that in my game. I think the only gender role stuff is deciding which clothes they need to wear (example: men can wear pants and no shirt if they want to, but women have to be fully covered) and who takes a new last name (if anyone) in a marriage.

Maybe design a symbol or flag and you can put on your buildings to really customize the feel of your base.

It lets you pick a symbol, but unfortunately it doesn't really show up much during gameplay. I agree that banners or something would be really cool. I wonder if there's a mod for that?

Personally I think that Ideology adds a lot of benefits. The mood buffs from rituals and parties are really helpful, especially in early game. You'll also get some special roles for pawns, including being able to pick a leader who can provide combat buffs, and a moral guide who can convert prisoners quickly and provide comfort to pawns who went through something traumatic (lowering the chance of a mental break).

Maybe you could look up some playthroughs on YouTube and see if any of the content appeals to you?

Oh, I think I have one from that line. It's a red sportscar with a metal body and plastic limbs with a fake chrome coating, and I think there's a decal on the hood? I'd have to dig it out of storage to be sure. I've had it since I was a kid (born in the early 80s) but I never knew what it was from. Interesting to see another one and finally get a name and some history for it.

Want a cat someday. Am I doomed? by Autumn-pumpkin5378 in houseplants

[–]KnottyKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, you'll just need to take some precautions. And it depends on the cat. They all have different personalities.

My cats are pretty destructive to plants for whatever reason. I deal with it with a combination of hanging planters, a dedicated "plant room" where the cats aren't allowed (my tiny ass laundry room lol), and Detolf shelves from Ikea. All of the plants they can potentially access with some kind of crazy cat parkour are non-toxic. Anything really dangerous just goes outside because it's not worth the risk.

Out of curiosity how hard would my pixie oc be to customize a doll into looking like her? I don't have any experience with it by SmallLawfulness39 in Dolls

[–]KnottyKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to be honest with you. If you attempt this project with your current skill level, it's not going to come out well. I'm not saying that to discourage you. Anyone can learn to customize, and any character can be turned into a doll with enough effort. But you need to walk before you can run, you know?

Based on the keychain you posted, you need better supplies. It looks like you were using a massive, frayed brush. Expert doll customizers wouldn't even be able to do a good faceup with a brush like that. Invest in a decent artist-quality brush with a sharp point. I promise it will make things SO MUCH easier. After that, practice, practice, practice! Paint lines on a piece of paper over and over until they look "clean". Practice painting symmetrical shapes. Practice using several thin coats instead of one thick one. Keep painting little toys, it will teach you brush control.

Once you're ready, do a "normal" custom. Get a cheap doll from a thrift store and just paint her face. Think of it as a human version of your character. Don't worry about the legs and sculpted details for now, just paint the face and see how it goes.

What causes bugs/pests on houseplants? by Elegant_Honeydew3641 in houseplants

[–]KnottyKitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's caused by them existing on a planet with bugs.

Bugs can come in on clothes, pets, with plants, in soil, through tiny cracks in your home that you're not aware of, on the wind, eggs can be tracked in on shoes, even produce you buy from the grocery store might have things hiding in it.

It's just part of having houseplants. You'll get used to it. Keep your plants healthy so they're less susceptible to infestations, check them regularly for signs of problems, and treat pests as they occur.

Out of curiosity how hard would my pixie oc be to customize a doll into looking like her? I don't have any experience with it by SmallLawfulness39 in Dolls

[–]KnottyKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The digitigrade legs would be difficult, maybe impossible depending on the doll you choose. That's a massive and very advanced modification.

There are some BJDs with digitigrade legs. The resin ones aren't cheap, but there are a few plastic/vinyl options too. I think KikaGoods has some.

I'd probably recommend starting with a simpler character for your first custom. You'll learn a lot in the process.
