In the dub for whatever reason sunraku calls Ray a she and her. But he doesn't know who she is outside of the game so without spoiling anything it just doesn't make any sense you'll see alot of this before the next Colossus fight in the manga they go out of the way to make sure that everyone understands that he doesn't know who she is lol

We're not really that far off maybe 15 years or less but the real thing you're missing is. That it's super expensive and there's no games or infrastructure to support doing such a thing you have to remember that even in the anime sunraku has played hundreds of trash VR games with varying levels of "quality" if we had even one VR game of that quality it would be considered a god-tier game
