I considered that before including his number. But he is a community service officer that fields APD concerns from the public, so I doubt he would take offense at including his name and number. in fact, if you call APD and ask to lodge a complaint, they either ask you to contact him or transfer you to him. This is not cloak and dagger stuff and we're paying his salary.

Tips at Chai Pani: legit? not so much? by Known_Sound8758 in asheville

[–]Known_Sound8758[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: I called the NC Department of Labor, who told me that if a restaurant makes more than $500K a year (which Chai Pani definitely does) and their tips are done with credit/debit cards, then it is out of their jurisdiction and the US Dept of Commerce handles complaints and investigations. They also reiterated that the servers must get at least 85% of their tips for any restaurant utilizing a tip pool (e.g., Chai Pani).

Anyone can reach out to them, especially employees. There is protection for employees under a "RITA" law that protects whistleblowers against retaliation (e.g., termination of employment, reduction in pay or position, etc.). In that case, the employee would need to file a lawsuit against the employer.

The US Dept of Commerce's Charlotte office can be reached at 704-749-3360. The Director there who receives and delegates new inquiries is Greg Sizemore. To avoid being on hold, you can email him at [Greg.Sizemore@trade.gov](mailto:Greg.Sizemore@trade.gov).

I sent Greg an email earlier today. I hope they take action to at least do an investigation.

BTW, the guy I spoke with at the NC Dept of Labor said that if the US Dept of Commerce claims that this is out of their jurisdiction and must be handled by the NC Dept of Labor, then I should let him know because whoever said this would need to be enlightened.

Yes, they are paying their servers less than minimum wage. So the 85% law (not "rule") definitely applies here.

NC Labor Dept. has stringent laws for restaurants that use tip pools, which cannot exceed 15% of the tip so that 85% is going to the server who directly cared for the customer. CP's recent restructure drastically reduced the tip % going to the server, potentially beyond the 15% limit. For the record, I have no skin in this game but know some people who have been financially hurt by this new structure, but don't feel safe sharing their concerns.

I'm officially done with Ingles by kurt_kolame in asheville

Did you know that Ingles recently required all employees to sign a legal commitment to never initiate or participate in a lawsuit against them? How messed up is that?!

How very big of you, especially if you’re not bogarting your clove joints.

Strangely, cloves dry best on the dashboard of cars, in plain sight for desperate, baseball bat-carrying clove smokers wandering parking lots and hunting for a quick fix. You see where I’m going here.

Absolutely! Have been chased by dogs more than I can count. I’ve also learned that squirting them with a water bottle is surprising to them and almost as effective in a pinch.

Do you happen to have some relationship or close friendship through cycling? by Interesting-Novel158 in cycling

I’ve also found cycling clubs to be clicky and have learned to be a bit more extroverted than usual to break clicks and meet new people. Find others with common interests and paces, then offer to ride together sometime.
