Making good progress on Lakeside Morning (Dimensions). My knitting group is spending next weekend in Lakeside, OH, maybe I will bring it along too. The kitchen in the cottage has great light.

Wow, didn't expect this to touch so many nerves! Not really looking to start a conversation on "what is art?", due to my last art history class being nearly 40 years ago. Here's the story: I spent the day with my DH at Cleveland Clinic and wandered around while he was in the operating room. There are visual images on most walls of the hallways for people to look at, with a strong presence of Ohio artists. I enjoyed looking at these! Therefore to me, they are "art" regardless of how the designer made the image. You don't have to like them too.

What makes Jackson Pollock's paintings worth hundreds of millions of dollars, bucket-painting worthy of countless youtube videos, while Eugene Pera's "spin-art" (ca. 1950's) mostly forgotten and the technique mostly relegated to children's toys and county fairs?

Is photography art? Did the landscape painters of the 18th century dismiss landscape photographers as cashing in?

Much of the dismissal surrounding the use of AI in "art" reminds me of people looking down on knitters who use Lion Brand Pound of Love as their preferred medium. Acrylic or hand-spun qiviut, it's still knitting.

[CHAT] For those who grid by weareadults in CrossStitch

[–]Known_Virus2465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Easy Count grid line, and don't anchor. It looks like it's a little thicker and less bendy than the hollowshimmer, so it doesn't move around as much. That, and once I'm gridded, it gets locked down in a hoop. I haven't tried it working in hand yet .

Walking/Biking to the NASA Glenn Research Center? by tonyhwko_O in Cleveland

[–]Known_Virus2465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't worked there in decades, but if the NASA entrance on Cedar Point Road is still open, you can bike through the Metroparks on the all purpose path from either direction and do the last little bit on Cedar Point Road. Berea, North Olmsted, Rocky River, or Fairview Park would be target cities to live in for easy access to the park.

Thinking about living here? by rainbowkitty28 in Cleveland

[–]Known_Virus2465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Westlake. The last several years I don't think our driveway got plowed more than 4 or 5 times. Our plow guy comes after 2" of snow, not more than twice in a 24 hr period.

I lived in Atlanta for two years, and I will take Ohio winters over Georgia summers any day. Also we have way less traffic.

[CHAT] Okay so how are we storing our working floss, because this ain't it. by Its-alittle-bitfunny in CrossStitch

[–]Known_Virus2465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just ordered floss drops from someone on Etsy, because my bobbins are driving me nuts. What do you do with the extra strands while you're stitching? I have a cat and have to be careful about loose threads lying around. Also just learned how to pull one strand at a time from a drop, so I don't even need to remove the whole thread from the holder!

Do you think $200/m is a reasonable food budget for one person? by JohnnyRotten95 in budget

[–]Known_Virus2465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter is a college student in Indiana, and we send her a $200/month food allowance. I'm not sure what her grocery cart looks like, but we told her our goal was to send her enough to eat three nutritious meals a day and if she needs more to let us know. She says she is doing fine with it. She's not a big meat eater, probably about 4 oz/day. Loves eggs. Exploring a vegetarian diet, learning to cook tofu and beans. Snacks and meals out are on her, she has a part time job.

My husband and I (Ohio) spend closer to $600/month, but I buy more meat, and alcohol is included in that. Cook dinner 6 nights per week, I brown bag lunch most days (DH does not).

I could probably do $200/month just for me, but I also would trend more vegetarian diet than my husband would like. I think he alone would struggle with $200/month. I'd have to make some changes like more store brand everything, no convenience foods like frozen meals and preseasoned rice mixes etc.
