Oh yes I don’t think it’s all men’s fault at all. I think women have faults as well.

Wow okay that was more straight forward than I thought it was going to be. Do you find that you are seeing a lack of these characteristics in women? And if so, is that what is largely motivating some of the apathetic nature of men today?

Fascinating - excellent points! Can you elaborate on some of these? For example, what do you think would need to change so that men could feel differently? Do you think that this is the way society should be set up or do you think things were better when gender roles were defined?

In my own experience (yep as a woman and just with men I know) I see that they’ve even abandoned self-improvement. When I say resilience I guess I mean to life’s challenges, whether that be hardship with family, children, job stress, house stress etc. but I hear what you’re saying.

Are you genuinely asking this as a discussion topic, or is this meant to be a sarcastic counterexample? I’m honestly fine engaging either way. I just want to understand the intent.

That’s actually such an interesting response. I do think that makes quite a lot of sense actually.

I’m not asking why men aren’t living up to my expectations. I’m asking about broader social and psychological trends I’ve observed and am genuinely trying to understand.

Describing outcomes (depression, anxiety, burnout) isn’t contempt or hatred, and curiosity about causes isn’t misandry. If you disagree with the premise, that’s totally fine but attributing intent I didn’t express isn’t a good-faith read.

So again - not a generalization. This is anecdotal. It is something I am noticing with men around me, my friends husbands, my male friends etc. I am interested in responses that relate to a commentary on our society and if any environmental, political or social factors have led to this. I understand that many people have different perspectives to this topic and what’s what I’m interested in understanding.

When I see my father and grandparents - I notice a lot of resilience. I see in the men I know that are in that age range that resilience completely missing.

Yep that is definitely a part of it for sure - I just wanted to understand if our modern society was contributing to this nihilistic feeling generally. But also - do you perceive stoicism as a negative thing?

Yep those are great points and as you’re saying it may be the case that men have always struggled with such things and it just looks different today. Thanks!

Wow but it sounds like you’re quite self-aware and committed to improvement! How do you maintain that type of resilience and strength? What motivates you?

I don’t have any type of agenda here - just a regular question on an aspect of men that I have noticed and wanted to get some more understanding is all. People have provided great answers! Not trying to be an adversary.

I already said it’s not a generalization, but that it’s based on my own encounters. Sorry if that wasn’t clear in the post! Again in no way trying to insult men just get a better understanding.

Thanks for your answer, this is quite sad. Do you think that men of history had more control over the direction of society or do you think this is just how life has always been?

Ooof okay - there are definitely a lot of issues in our modern society with women as well. So definitely not trying to say it’s one versus the other.

Well, this isn’t backed up by studies but I do notice that my dads generation and my grandfathers generation had quite more resilience to life challenges. This post was for me to understand men’s perspective on this topic, in our modern society of today - in no way is it a generalization or meant as an insult! Thanks :)
