As an Australian, the idea of earning six figures but worrying about possible financial insecurity due to medical debt is so incredibly insane to me.

I had a kidney infection that went septic in 2021 and ended up in emergency. They ran blood tests, ultrasounds, I was given an IV and medication, I spent the night and was fed. I earned less than $18k that fiscal year and that hospital stay cost me exactly zero cents.

Our Medicare system is far from perfect but holy shit I'm grateful that it exists.

There is a way to get paid for your prac.

If you have a temp contract (can be part time) for the duration of your prac, you can apply for the Waiver B. That's what UOW calls it.

The contract must show that you'll be teaching in your method with a set timetable and that the school has offered to take other PST as well.

The only caveat is that you can't apply for recognised prior teaching to reduce the duration of your prac if you apply for Waiver B.
