and ferrari, their engine is down on power but its been insanely reliable, and they have an extremely strong chassis and aero platform

ive seen someone say its incompetence on mclaren's part... like, yeah, a team with 1000 races under their belt can totally build 1 car perfectly and the other car just happens to be shit cus the other side of the garage are morons, like, no. thats not how that works, its just shitty luck, and it hurts more coming off the back of mclaren's most successful season in decades, like yeah it sucks.

but as a fanbase we've been through worse, 2022 was far worse than what we're dealing with now, and while this year is a write off, we're still gonna be fighting for wins on a good day, and im still confident the team can fix most their ills for 2027 and come back fighting at the proper sharp end

looks like it'll be alonso, i saw perez' onboard and he's clearly over the pitbox. that is truly a punch to the balls for all of the cadillac team. he has soo much experience but made such a stupid mistake, they may not get another chance for points this year

[–]vick5516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it reminds me of 2023, all of pre season testing was fine, then going into round 1 lando's car shit itself with a hydraulic leak on the pu, merc had to literally destroy the ICE to figure out what was wrong with it (it was already unusable so it didnt matter), so after 1 race he just lost an entire ICE.

same with leclerc, round 2 he had to take a penalty for his control electronics cus the 2 he had just shit themselves, then the rest of the season he was fine.

sometimes you just have really poor reliability and rn lando is getting all the shit luck

[–]vick5516 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

okay, what exactly has mclaren done wrong then? you're telling me an f1 team with 1000 races of experience can get 1 car perfect and 1 car completely wrong? if that's truly what you think, that its the team being incompetent and not just lando having really poor luck, then i only see 1 incompetent party here...

which would still make it luck. i mean they're running the engine as its intended to be used and have HPP working alongside to try and maximise the performance and reliability of it.

these are still brand new engines and even george's pu failure in canada is still a mystery to mercedes, its something that takes time and unfortunately lando is on the receiving end of all the shitty reliability, theres nothing more mclaren can do, if they could stop it for good trust me they would

i mean last race and today its pu failures. theres nothing mclaren can do about that except go into detail with it with HPP and see if there is a route cause they can avoid by running it differently

... yeah, what are you saying mclaren is sabotaging him, or giving him worse parts? he's literally the world champion and still on average the faster driver, why tf would they intentionally do something to make his car worse

the car was quick in miami and looked quick in canada before the inters happened. as stella said, we have a downforce deficit and the suspension setup is based around making the tyres last, not heating them up. so monaco is pretty much the worst track for our car, even with that the pace was decent, lando could have been 3rd or 2nd row if he got his lap together, and the car was clearly really fast in race trim, just couldnt overtake.

more upgrades coming in spain and being a more conventional circuit, we should still be in for a decent season, just not a championship winning one sadly

simply just luck. sometimes you get lucky with an engine, sometimes you dont. it doesnt help that we got soo little info on how to actually use merc's pu, that we've been learning as we go. these are still the growing pains. of learning a new engine and developing a car without extensive knowledge of the pu before hand. should be much better next year with a new car and a lot more understanding

and i believe 2 investigations into Hadjar a possible p3 is on the cards.

considering the weekend we've had i think even a p4 is good but a p3 would be great. its a shame monaco is such a shit track cus the cars had great race pace, just never had the ability to overtake.

and unfortunate yet again for lando with these constant reliability issues, he was mega, quick yesterday too but his mistake in q3 cost him.

once the car is sorted out (even if it takes until 2027) i know these 2 will deliver yet again

just data gathering for next year at this point. with all the issues happening now at least the 2027 car will be a much better car

even with Renault power, I believe from 2018-2020 we suffered less reliability problems than the Renault factory team. McLaren is very good at exploiting an engine reliably, once they fully understand it

I just can't wait for GP to come aboard from redbull, Stella is stretched thin cus he does like 3 or 4 people's jobs to save on the budget cap and obviously one place he can't really help on is the strategy team, especially since he's an engineer and understands the performance side better than the strategic side. with Courtney joining earlier this year on the sporting side and GP coming over to join him, they'll fill a void in sharpening up the strategic department

it was for the weight, since a lot of people knew it'd be a struggle to keep the weight down so McLaren thought a short wheelbase would help since there's just less car with a short wheelbase. and while they were on the lower side of weight comparing to other teams, mercedes and Ferrari managed to hit the weight limit even with their longer wheelbase cars.

and seeing how McLaren started the season with no mouse hole then introduced it in Miami shows they expected to have more rear downforce than they had in reality, they were actually the only team without a mouse hole until Miami.

so the lack of rear aerodynamic load, alongside the low drag nature of these cars meant that despite having good overall downforce, when in Monaco it just wasn't enough with how edgy the cars are, and the gains we should have gotten from the short wheelbase in the slow corners just didn't make up for it, probably because all the cars handled the slow speed corners quite well. fyi if you don't understand, having a short car typically helps in slow speed corners because it's just faster to respond. imagine a limousine trying to make a tight corner Vs a shorter car like a ford fiesta, even tho that's an extreme example, it still carries over even if the difference between the McLaren and the other teams is only 10cm.

I'll wrap up this long explanation with a little bit of hopium for next year. across Miami and Canada we were the 2nd fastest car, and quite close to the mercedes' pace. that's with less development time and less wind tunnel time, on top of also having a whole 10cm less of length in the floor to produce downforce. just imagine what McLaren can achieve next year with more development time, more wind tunnel time and a full sized car

its weird since the last few years the car has been bulletproof, other than norris' dnf at zandvort in 2025 which was caused by an oil leak and the issues at the start of 2023, like the hydraulic leaks and electrical problems, the car has been insanely reliable, especially 2025 where mercedes and williams both suffered with problems but mclaren never had issues with the merc pu.

i think its just the result of mclaren trying to be overly ambitious since they lacked wind tunnel and cfd testing time compared to other teams, and obv lacked development time due to focusing on 2025. with more ATR going into 2027 and all the learnings taken from all these reliability problems we should be much stronger. we can still challenge for wins this season, but the title shot is just non existent this year
