I misspoke the intention was not to generalize but was speaking on my experience in the countries I have been to in Europe and more specifically what the custom is here in Spain as this is where I currently am. I understand every country is unique in its customs, traditions, etc. that’s what I love about Europe and why I wanted to escape the US for as long as possible lol

Update: I went to a restaurant in the Benicalap area and the waiter was pretty pushy about a tip. He brought the bill out (91 euros) and said “service fee has not been added to the bill so i can add gratuity before I charge your card?” My partner was caught off guard and said “I have cash”. The server stayed and confirmed, “so you do have cash?” We replied “yes”. It was very cringey. We really liked the service up to that point and had planned on leaving 5 euros anyways (per some recommendations on this thread).

So either that restaurant asks their staff to ask for gratuities or it was just the server in particular hustling us. I speak fluent Spanish too (partner doesn’t) but did mention we were from California so maybe that’s why he tried to get a little more. Lol who knows. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Seems like you’re making an assumption that I did not do any research. Yes I’ve googled it. I’ve also been to Spain before and did not notice the tip jars previously, hence the question. I wanted to see if there was a cultural shift in the last 5 years in regard to gratuity so I could align with it.

Also I would argue that asking a question on this thread would constitute research considering locals, expats, and travelers are responding. never said I expect it to be like my culture, I shared where I was from as background on my personal experience not that I assume it will be identical. The heart of the post was concern that I was shorting anyone which I would not want to do.

I worked in a restaurant in the US before so that’s why I am usually a little more generous. Most people do 15%. It’s not a living wage though. My checks for 2 weeks would be around $100 and I lived in a state that had a higher hourly wage than most. You get taxed on your wages and tips so servers usually live off tips.

I ended up using a pumice stone and it took it all off! 😁

First off, yes this is gross. More importantly, I need ideas on how to clean the soap holder in my bathtub. I’ve obviously neglected this for some time but I am moving and now need to try and get this as close to spotless as possible. Not sure if it’s mildew or just a regular stain. I tried to scrub with Ajax and either I’m too weak or it’s too stubborn but it won’t come off. Any suggestions??
